He was taken aback, going through his mind what he should have done, and what he should not have.
When Aragorn had left, he had stayed where he was standing, unable to comprehend how the words had just flown out of his mouth. The hurt in Aragorn's eyes, when he blurted out that everyone would die. No hope was left. Estel was far gone. But the future king was to maintain a strong façade, for his courage was reflected upon by the men, the same men who had seen too many winters, or too few. And that thread that was hung between the balance of life and death was fraying even then.
-There is no hope left-
…no hope…
there is always hope-
…Not here there isn't…
-we fight for what we believe in, whether it be light or darkness…
The whispers in his head stopped as soon as they had started, though a murmur echoed incessantly in his mind, unrelenting and persistent. Light, it whispered, Restore what has been lost.
The blond edhel shook his head, contenting to gaze upon Eärendil and Elbereth among the stars and the blanket of darkness and rain. Valinor and its sheltered haven seemed so far away in the sea of orcs that threatened to cleave away the dreams for a better life. The everlasting light seemed faint now… almost non-existent to the malevolence that threatened to cover the land in a second darkness.
But there was a presence that soothed and took away all tribulations. The edhel got to his feet, looking just like his ata'da Orophor and Thranduil before him, regal in his stature, the beat of drums humming in his bones.
Life still existed, in the trees, and in the people, their lights burning brightly. He would fight to make sure it would exist and thrive for as long as he drew breath.
"There is always hope," he whispered to the rain, "Always."
And he turned his back to the falling sky, his gaze set and determined, seeking out the one in who hope could be, and would be, given to all. This would be a battle they would win.
…
"Is this all you can conjure, Saruman?" Théoden declared triumphantly. (Movie-verse)
