FORGOTTEN
Broken, the darkness was now my refuge, solitude. I fled from all who had known me. I knew what I had forfeited that day. I was all alone, yes; my siblings were always there for me. They can't cure my heart no matter how hard they try. I buried that part of my life, pretending it was a childish game, all a game. God, they really believed my act. And the scariest thing was I was slowly believing it too, deluding myself into a false sense of security.
I was forgetting, the beauty of the sun when he was silhouetted against it, the lilt in his voice when he spoke of something curious and new to him, the way his lips tilted in that small half smile when he looked at me. I ought to have known that in essence this was a fool's play for it would soon turn on me and that it did.
I was in America the day it happened. The telegraph came.
Come quickly. Family perished. Accident in the station.
I hurried home, a week to late. They were laid to rest, ma, dad, Pete, Ed and dear sweet little Lu. I was the last link, even the professor and Aunt Polly. All gone.
I don't remember that land, the one where the real me was. The current me was a fake, a copy. I wanted to go to where Lu, Pete and Ed where. I knew they were finally in the place they always loved and dreamed about. They unlike me never forgot about it. They unlike me didn't leave themselves behind in there. I did.
I struggled to remember; to find entrance into that place that was forbidden to me, I finally found someone who I loved enough. Not with all my heart, never that much. But I loved him with what was left of my heart. There was a memory that I had loved someone, still loved that someone. That they were out there, waiting. Even after marriage, I continued seeking. My murky memories were slowly being uncovered. Then, one day, it all came back to me.
I was crossing the street to my house when it all returned to me. A crash, a bang then, I found myself face down on the grass… grass?! Fresh air, sweeter than London's. I slowly lifted myself off the ground, when did I even land on it in the first place I wondered. These thoughts were chased away when I realised where I was.
Narnia! Yet, this is not it and somehow, it was. So similiar, the things were the same but so different, colours far more vivid.
"Susan!" a ringing cry broke through the stillness.
I spun on my feet. "Lucy?"
And I was surrounded, my world righted itself finally. Peter, Edmund and Lucy all there, finally. I was so happy, except there was something missing. One final piece and the puzzle would be complete.
Oh. Oh. There.
He was smiling, arms folded, watching. Laughing, I ran towards him. He held me back by my arms, took a good look at me and drew me in. I was finally home. How could I have forgotten him, him with star bright eyes and the smell of juniper. How could I have forgotten my half. How did I even forget his name. No matter what, it was done. But now, I remembered.
"Caspian."
