The Shortest Line
The static crackles in my ear, can you hear me?
The line's gone dead, I..I'll never know how insinsere you feel about me,
The lights flash red...
Connection's lost, our lines are crossed, I think I'm losing you...
I don't know what you want,
So I'll tell you how I think it should be.
We'll go back to the start,
And we'll draw the shortest line from you to me.
Cindy looked across the room as Lindsay sat on the couch next to her. She could feel her ears ringing with the words. Maybe we would just be better off pretending like none of this ever happened. She blinked back tears as she stood up to distance herself from the older woman. She suddenly turned, anger in her eyes. "I think that is one of the stupidest things that you would ever suggest! You think that you can manage to get my heart and soul wrapped up in this..whatever it is..and then just say that we should forget it?! How insane are you?!" Lindsay looked at the floor, trying as hard as she could to not look at the reporter. She knew her defenses would fall the second she made eye contact. Cindy knelt in front of the woman and held her hands tightly. "Let's restart." She whispered. "Give it a new chance."
The bells are ringing in my head, and we can stop them,
By holding on to all the promises we've made.
I've not forgotten, they ring so true..
Now I can hear, the lines are clear, I think I'm getting through...
"Please? Just, a whole new start? Fresh from the beginning. Okay?" Lindsay hated how the reporter would always make it sound like she was the one who caused it all. "I know I may have screwed up..."
"No." Lindsay choked out. "You didn't."
"Then why are you being this way?" She asked, her voice soft, her hands still gently holding Lindsay's.
"I'm scared." Lindsay replied, her voice not even a whisper. Those were words she never wanted to admit to anyone, especially not this redhead.
"Scared of what? The KMNK?" Cindy prodded, moving in closer to her.
"No." Lindsay said, finally looking at Cindy. "Scared of what's happening to me. Every single time I see you, I fall harder and faster. And it's scary."
Cindy gently kissed Lindsay and then pulled back with a smile. "You don't have to be."
