Dear Hilbert,

How are you? I haven't heard from you since you became Unova champion. I'm so proud of you! Did I ever tell you about how I used to be a Pokémon trainer at your age? Those were the good old days… Anyway, I'm writing to tell you something incredibly important: Happy 18th Birthday! To be honest, It seems like only yesterday you were 15, setting off on your Pokémon journey. But all that aside, I have something else to tell you. Do you remember where you got that hat of yours? You probably don't, you were too young. Honey, there's been something I've been hiding from you all this time: you did have a father once. You're of age now, and I feel like this is the right time to tell you. Let me start from the beginning: Your father was a Pokémon trainer, just like I was. We met on our journey to become a Pokémon master at the Opelucid City gym. He said he wanted to help unite Pokémon and their trainers and have them build a closer bond. I on the other hand, thought of Pokémon as cute pets one could have. Anyway, we got married one day and decided to move to Nuvema Town. One day, your father had to leave for Sinnoh to help Professor Rowan study Pokémon. Weeks later, a letter arrived stating he died in an accident involving several Psychic Pokémon. Years go by, and I eventually meet Ghetsis. That's right, Ghetsis. He was better then than he is now, though. Back then, he was kind, caring, and really REALLY attractive. (He knew how to push the right buttons!) Anyway, we eventually fall for each other due to our similar circumstances. Turns out, he was left widowed by his wife when she died in a Pokémon-related accident as well. To make a long story short, we marry and have two wonderful children: You, and N. Yes, N is your brother. For a while, Ghetsis was good to us and wasn't that hate-filled man he is today. But one night, he hits N in a fit of rage. He couldn't take it anymore; he hated Pokémon and needed to take his hate out on someone. He'd just been waiting for too long. Before he could hurt you or N anymore, I took you and N away from him. Later, I decided to take Ghetsis to court for full custody of both of you, but at this time Ghetsis already founded that hypocritical Team Plasma and was already going strong. He threatened the judge, and in turn I could only get full custody of one child: you. Unfortunately, Ghetsis got full custody of N. You were too young to remember anything, but I kept the cap N made for you on your first birthday. And according to you, he still has that puzzle cube I gave him. It's sad to see that Ghetsis abused him like that, but in the end, I couldn't do anything! I was forbidden to see him! All that aside, it was nice talking to you after such a long time, Hilbert.

Happy Birthday,

Mom
