This 300 word drabble is the product of the 69th challenge on LJ Me and Thee 100. According to my word count, it's 300 words but according to this site, it's 301.
So if you're into details, I guess it's not a 300 word drabble. I give up!
The original title on LJ was SWEET 69 but I thought that might offend some readers here. But it's the same regardless of the exact number or the title!
Right as Rain
Or
Sweet 69
Exactly sixty-nine days after I wakened from a coma, Hutch and me celebrated.
According to Hutch, nobody thought I'd survive the attack by Gunther's hit men. I guess I didn't at first. But I know it was Hutch that brought me back and it was him that kept me goin'.
I'll tell ya, those first steps were pure hell. Just sitting up in bed almost did me in. My chest burned; it felt like it was comin' apart. I was sure I was gonna throw up. But I was determined to get out of that bed. It didn't matter to me that it was only one step.
I'll never forget Hutch's crazy grin as I wobbled toward him. The sweat poured down my back but damn, I did it.
After the first grueling day in physical therapy Hutch leaned down and whispered in my ear. I laughed and winced at the same time but I grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer to me. I could hardly breathe 'cause of the pain and my hands were shakin' but I nodded back at him.
I absolutely hated physical therapy. The dragon lady pushed and pulled me till I thought I'd bust. Took a week but, finally I walked between parallel bars while everybody cheered me on, whooping it up. Anyway, I know I looked like a drunken cow, lumbering across the room, but it felt awfully good to stand upright.
So sixty-nine days after I rejoined the land of the living, Hutch plans a late night party. I was flyin' high on pain pills and he comes into my room, stoned out of his mind with a platter full of real food. He falls into bed beside me, ready to celebrate.
69 sweet days and counting.
This party's right as rain!
