Author's Note: First of all, this takes place just after the Battle City arc (and the intervening Noa arc). Second, this is the first fanfiction I've ever published, and I'm willing to read any thoughts you may have, whether it be praise, criticism, or flames. It would be nice to know you like it, but it you don't, that's alright, too. I like it, and that's a great feeling for an author. However, I will still take your comments into consideration for any future works I may write, because your opinion is valid. Lastly, I hope you have a great day. :)
Whenever they had some downtime, Serenity could be found either watching Joey play Duel Monsters or talking with him, always maintaining some form of physical contact. She'd have her head on his shoulder while watching T.V., arms brushing the other's if they walked past each other, holding onto his sleeve when he was arguing with Kaiba (or Duke, or Tristan, or Marik, or...), laying her head on his lap when she was tired but didn't want Joey to be alone. Yugi thought it seemed almost protective sometimes, but figured they probably just wanted to reassure themselves that they were both still there, not some figment of their imaginations, and were not about to be separated again. It was sweet, and it almost made him wish he had a brother or sister.
One evening, though, as he moved to push the partly open door aside to tell them dinner was ready, he paused, silently taking in the sight of the siblings closer than he'd ever seen them before. Bathed in the orange glow of the sunset, Joey's hair seemed aflame and Serenity's face showed an expression of pure joy, their fingers twined together as their lips danced.
Yugi hesitated, unsure if he should interrupt in order to finish his original mission of announcing dinner or let the couple (and oh, how that sounded so right, even just in his head, like the last piece fitting into its proper place in a difficult puzzle) continue. He stood by the ajar door a few moments longer, then decided to give them some privacy. He reached his hand out and slowly pulled the handle toward himself, turning it and quietly putting the latch in place before letting go.
The teen turned and walked downstairs, telling his grandfather that the pair had fallen asleep after too many rounds of Duel Monsters, and was easily believed. After all, how often did Yugi lie? He hated to do so, but figured he owed his best friend this much at least, considering everything they'd been through. Joey deserved to be happy, and if he found that happiness in Serenity, and she found it in him, Yugi would support them in full. (He was content with being an only child for now, though. Besides, he had his Grandpa, Yami, and his friends, and they were all the family he needed.)
