Disclaimer: I don't know whether Stephen King or the SyFy network owns more of this, but whichever it is, it isn't me.
Spoilers: THE WHOLE DANG THING! Honestly, if you haven't seen episode 5 of season 1, "Ball and Chain," turn back right now.
A/N: I've been planning to write a "Haven" story since I saw the pilot, but it wasn't until this past episode that I really felt inspired. Eric Balfour's face when he saw the picture of his daughter was just so sad. I wanted to reach into the screen and give him a hug. The rules of reality being what they are, that was impossible, so I made myself feel better by writing his depressing thoughts. Yeah, talk about a twisted therapy. What can I say, I'm weird. It's short, but how long-winded would you be after you just had the life sucked out of you (literally and figuratively)? Anyway, here you go.
What You've Never Had
You can't miss what you've never had.
You can't miss tiny hugs and sticky kisses.
You can't miss pictures colored outside the lines and houses made of popsicle sticks.
You can't miss extravagant birthday parties and overrated Christmas presents.
You can't miss parent-teacher conferences and the first day of school.
You can't miss chronic messy rooms and endless broken vases.
You can't miss baby talk and teenage rants.
You can't miss the chicken pox and runny noses.
You can't miss soccer games and piano recitals.
You can't miss intimidating boyfriends and telling the facts of life.
You can't miss broken curfew and prom night fears.
You can't miss college tuition and saying goodbye.
You can't miss walking her down the isle and holding your first grandbaby.
Hell, you can't miss her.
After all, you can't miss what you've never had.
So why does it hurt so much?
