In Remembrance Chapter 1
1899
"Elise, they're gaining on us" Lord Jason Dalphton grabbed his wife's hand and tried to hurry her along. "Jason, I can't run anymore. Run, it's me they want" Elise tried to convince her husband. Bushes around them rattled as they were surrounded. "No, I'll distract them" Jason told his wife. "What about you?" Elise asked. "I'll be ok" Jason replied as he gave her a pistol and pushed her into the grove of trees behind him.
"Where is the woman and the child?" Sinthar demanded. "You'll never find them," Jason boldly declared. "I'll ask you one last time, where is the woman and the child" Sinthar again demanded. Again, Jason replied, "You'll never find them". Elise ran as far as she could. Quietly, she crept back to the spot where she had left Jason. "Oh, my god" she screamed. He lay there, lifeless. "Jason!!!!" her screams could be heard for miles around. The crunch of the twigs around her announced the arrival of several raptors. She fired several bullets, but it was no use. They overtook her before she could kill them. **********************************************************************
Back in Avalon, ten-year-old Marguerite was helping two-year-old Veronica put a puzzle together. "Very good, Veronica" Marguerite loved Veronica as if she were her own sister. Abigail, the protector of the plateau, interrupted their happiness. "Marguerite, we need to talk" Abigail told the young girl. "What's wrong Aunt Abby?" Marguerite asked as a nurse picked up Veronica and walked out of the room.
Abigail and Elise, both children of the plateau, had been raised together and sent to the outside world to find a mate. Abigail, the daughter of the protector, Abigail married Thomas Layton, an American scientist and Elise, the descendent of the Druid priestess Morrigan, married Lord Jason Dalphton, second son of the Count of Evington.
"I have some bad news; your parents were killed on the plateau" Marguerite eyes overflowed as Abigail also started crying. "It's not fair, it's not fair" Marguerite repeated over and over again. "I know, it isn't fair" Abigail tried to comfort the girl. Weeks passed and Abigail and Tom grew anxious. Marguerite wouldn't eat, she barely slept and she cried all the time.
"Come, Marguerite, lets talk, you and I" Tom Layton pulled his niece's hand along the garden path. "I don't want to" Marguerite stood in place. "Then we can stand right here" he stood next to her. "All day?" she asked, her eyes widening. "All day, all night, into next week forever if I have to" he replied. "Fine" Marguerite huffed and sat down on a bench. "I know that you miss your parents, we all do. Elise was your aunt's best friend; she misses her as much as you do" he told her.
Marguerite's eyes started to water and she cried on his shoulder. "I know, its ok" he comforted her. "Stop crying, I have something to show you" he pulled out the necklace out of his pocket. "What's this?" she asked. "Your father bought it last time he was in London. Your parents planned to give it to you on your next birthday, but your aunt and I thought that you would like it now" he told her. To our daughter, Marguerite, forever in our thoughts the inscription said. "My lord, my lord!" they were interrupted by an avatar covered in blood. "What's wrong?" Tom asked. "Sinthar's armies are attacking the outer villages. They are demanding Lady Marguerite" he replied. "How many villages have been attacked?" Tom inquired. "Only three, but he says he will continue until we give in" he was told.
"Uncle Tom?" Marguerite asked. "We must return to the castle" he replied. "Abby..." Tom started as they walked in. "I know" she replied. "Captain, find as many survivors as you can and evacuate the rest of the villages. I don't want Sinthar destroying any more villages" she commanded him. "Yes, milady" he replied. "Aunt Abby?" a worried Marguerite turned to her aunt. "No one is going to hurt you, I promise" Abby hoped that her words would ring true.
Marguerite seemed to get back to her normal routine. Then trouble started again. "Milady, trouble, Sinthar's armies have moved beyond the outer villages and this time he threatens Lady Veronica" an avatar ran into the throne room. Abigail and Tom looked at each other. They sadly came to the conclusion. Marguerite had to be sent out of Avalon. "Marguerite, we need to talk to you" Tom told her as they sat down. "What's wrong" she asked. "Sinthar's armies have been attacking the outer villages. Your uncle and I think that's its best, for your safety that you live with the Earl and Countess" Abigail gingerly explained to the girl.
"You want me to go away? Am I that bad? Mum and Dad have to die and now you want to send me away from the only home I've ever known?" Marguerite raged. "Sweetheart, we love you as if you were our own and we would love to raise you, but you can't stay here. I'll take you to your grandparents. You don't have to leave right now; we will leave when you're ready. We love you, as your parents loved you, no matter what" Tom tried to comfort Marguerite.
Marguerite hesitantly packed her bags. She didn't want to leave home, but Uncle Tom and Aunt Abigail thought it was best. She had only met her grandparents a few times. Her grandfather seemed nice while her grandmother referred to her as "the girl" and insulted her mother. "Are you ready?" Abigail walked in carrying Veronica. "Yes" Marguerite took one last look at her room.
"You'll come back as soon as it's safe, I promise" Abigail hugged her niece. "Bye Veronica" Marguerite lifted Veronica up. "Bye bye" Veronica hugged the older girl. "I'll be back soon" Tom kissed his wife and daughter. "Uncle Tom?" Marguerite turned to him. "It'll be fine, don't worry" Tom squeezed her hand.
"Can I help you sir?" the butler asked. "My name is Tom Layton, I'm here to see the Earl and Countess" he explained. Tom was ushered into the study while Marguerite paced in the hallway. "He shouldn't have gone to that jungle with that trollop. I was right and no one listened to me and now he's both dead. What are we going to do with her? We cannot raise another child" Henrietta raged.
"Dearest, perhaps we should listen to what Mr. Layton has to say?" Joseph attempted to calm his wife. "My lady, my lord the reason I brought Marguerite here is because my wife and I feel that she needs to be closer to her family and receive the education that we would never be able to give her" Tom gingerly explained. "Girl, come in here" Henrietta said. Marguerite stood silent while the older woman examined her. Henrietta was startled by the resemblance. "What's your name, girl?" the older women asked. "Marguerite" she kept her eyes on the floor
"I must say, she does have her father's coloring" Joseph commented. "If you stay, you must listen to us. I will not have a member of my family running around like some savage jungle princess. Am I understood?" Henrietta sternly warned her granddaughter. "Yes ma'am" Marguerite replied. Tom quietly got up and walked away. "Uncle Tom, where are you going?" she ran toward her uncle. "Your grandparents will take good care of you" Tom fought back tears. "Please, don't leave me here" Marguerite begged as she was dragged back into the house. Wiping the tears away, he repeated the incantation. "I'm sorry" he disappeared into the mist.
