Prologue

The moment she stepped out the door the fresh autumn air hit her in the face. She took a deep breath and a smile crossed her lips.

This moment of peace and quiet was rudely interrupted by her cell phone vibrating in the pocket of her jacket. Taking it out she went down the stairs and started walking down the side-walk.

It was a text from her "best friend" (she hadn't known her for more than a few weeks), saying Can you come over here at 6 pm?

She grinned inwardly. Sure, this woman was obsessed with what she called "her duty". Well, whatever. She didn't mind. She would go with it, and then she would be off somewhere with her present boyfriend; probably she'd go to Brighton, she loved Brighton and she was missing the UK anyway.

She was so caught up in writing an answer that she didn't see the guy in the suit. She only realized he was there when she had already run into him, and he had to catch her before she could hit the asphalt with her behind.

"Oh, I'm sorry, S-", she began, but she broke off as she looked into his eyes. And she had to swallow. She knew those eyes.

For a moment she thought she saw the same kind of recognising in his brown eyes, before she hastily tore her gaze from his and stumbled out of his arms. Looking down at her feet, she mumbled a nearly incomprehensible sorry and walked past him. She could feel that her cheeks were turning scarlet.

Deleting her former message to her friend she started a new one. Just had an apparition – guess who's in town?

She had just reached her car when her cell phone vibrated again. She unlocked the door and slid into the driver's seat before fumbling the phone out of her pocket and opening the message with a slight frown on her face.

U mean, beside Klaus?

Again there was a half smile crossing her features, before she typed a reply.

Literally. Elijah.

She had just started the car when her friend replied. She took a glance in the rear-view mirror before opening the message and scanning the few words.

No surprise there. Be here at 6, won't you?

Typing a short Yes she finally pulled out of the parking spot and got on the road. Even though she was trying hard to concentrate, she couldn't really take her mind off of him. Only a short glance at her watch brought her back from the depths of her spinning thoughts – she was already late for her first day at work. Awesome.
