Why can't life ever be like the stories in books?

Sora sat in the shade of a tree in Odaiba park. It was her favourite place to be alone and just read in summer. She wouldn't be disturbed here.

'Whatcha reading?' a shadow appeared on the page. Or maybe she would be. Sora looked up, blinking at the figure silhouetted against the sun. It was the leader of the digidestined complete with skipy brown hair and goggles. He sat down beside her.

'Come on, whatcha reading?' he repeated. Sora sighed. The book had just reached a climax and the appearance of her best friend, even if he was her secret crush, was not a welcome one.

'Just Listen, by Sarah Dessen,' she told him, lifting the book up so he could inspect the cover. He took it from her, losing her place which made her grit her teeth in frustration. Tai flicked through the book. He must be bored, Sora decided, and he's come to inflicted his boredom on someone else. It was just her bad fortune that she had been the one he had found.

'What's it about?' he asked, passing it back.

'It's about a girl and boy who become best friends and fall in love,' she told him. She expected a derisive comment about girly love stories and Tai didn't disappoint her.

'Ugh, a soppy romantic book! Why don't you read a proper book with action and suspense?'

'It's not soppy! It's really good. You just don't have any romance in your soul,' she smiled and poked him in the ribs. He looked hurt.

'I do so have romance,' he pouted.

'Do not.' Sora grinned while he feigned shock.

'Do too!'

'Alright then. Prove it!'

'I will!' Tai exclaimed, then looked puzzled, 'how?'

'Tell me how you would make a romantic evening for a girl,' she challenged.

'Ok. Well, first I would take her to the cinema to watch the chick flick of her choice and pretend to enjoy it too,' Sora laughed at that and he smiled and continued, 'I would be a prefect gentleman of course, paying for everything, no matter how she protested. It would give me extra brownie points in her eyes. Next, I would take her to a restaurant by the beach front and we would eat while the sun went down over the ocean creating a beautiful sunset. It would have to be one of the cheaper restaurants though, because after paying for the cinema I would be much poorer but hopefully the atmosphere would make up for the less than adequate food. Then, after the meal, we would go for a starlight walk along the beach and in the light of the full moon we would share our first kiss.'

Sora found her heart was beating fast as she looked into his gorgeous eyes as he described the night. She took a deep breath to steady herself. 'I have to admit, that is romantic. I'm impressed. You sound like you've been planning this for a while.'

'That's because I have. I wanted my first date with the girl of my dreams to be perfect,' Tai explained. Sora's heart wrenched and she looked away.

'Who's the lucky girl?' she tried to ask cheerfully but failed. Tai gently took her face in his hands and turned her to face him.

'You,' he said softly and she saw the love in his eyes directed at her. 'I was thinking Saturday. That's when the moon is full. It may have to be our second kiss though.' He kissed her, long and soft and wonderful.

Sometimes life can have moments like the ones in books and sometimes, life can be even better.
