The only two left in the arena

This is a fanfic I wrote about what would happen if Katniss and Rue were the only two left in the arena.

Katniss POV

The cannon sounded. Another tribute dead. We all knew what it meant. I then looked at Rue as they projected an image of the deceased tribute onto the sky. I froze.

Peeta.

A thousand images ran through my mind as to how he might've died. Tracker- jackers, mutants, stab wounds. Maybe it was just something like infection, thirst, starvation. It couldn't be. Not at this stage. I knew there were only a handful of us left but I didn't know exactly how many. I could only watch in shock as the Capitol plane came and took Peeta's body, out of my sight, out of my reach.

"Are you OK, Katniss?"

Rue was staring at me with her big, innocent brown eyes. She knew I was upset. But I had to be strong. For her.

"I'll be fine Rue."

"Katniss…?"

"Yes Rue?"

"How many tributes are left?"

"I don't know, Rue. Not many though."

As if to answer her question, an announcement was made,

"Attention, attention tributes, there are now only two tributes left. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favour."

Two. Two tributes. I just sat there, unable to even begin to believe what had just been said. Me and Rue were the only two left.

I should've ended the alliance ages ago. Just taken off one night while she was soundly sleeping, lost in her own thoughts. It would've been hard, but not as hard as this.

Neither of us had the courage to do what they wanted. Then, I realised we didn't have to do what they wanted…

"Katniss?"

Rue's voice interrupted my train of thought.

"Yes, Rue?"

"Congratulations."

"On what?"

"Winning."

"Rue, I haven't won yet, you have just a good as chance as…"

Suddenly, the faint smell of blood reached my nose. I looked down and saw Rue's shirt, stained slightly with blood. She must've taken one of my arrows when I was in my train of thought.

"Rue… it's ok they can get you to the hospital when this is over, I promise, Rue, they'll be able to save you."

"I don't want them to save me, I want you to win."

I watched as Rue started to lose more blood. I had to do something. I wasn't prepared to watch her die, not here, not after the amazing fight she'd put up. Then I remembered.

I turned around so she wouldn't see. I then put a handful of nightlock berries in my mouth, I then bit down on them as hard as I could.

"Katniss, what is it?"

The smell of blood was getting more distinct.

"You won, Rue"

"No, I didn't…"

She then saw my teeth stained with nightlock juice.

Katniss, no this isn't what I wanted, no…"

"They're not expecting you to win, that's why you have to win."

"But Katniss…"

She looked down at her wound.

"They'll look after it Rue."

"But…"

The nightlock started to work. I went down on the floor to my knees clasping my heart, in absolute agony.

"Katniss?"

I looked up.

"Yes, Rue?"

"Don't forget to say hi to your dad."

She understood. I smiled as she started to sing the lullaby I'd sung to her when she couldn't sleep one night and I faintly heard the announcement saying she had won. Then, everything became a blur and my eyelids closed for the last time.
