Author's Note - This is my very first House fanfic. It's an AU one-shot. Please leave feedback. :-)
"It's a good thing you failed to become a mom, because you suck at it." ~ Greg House to Lisa Cuddy
He stood outside the church, his hateful words echoing in his head. How could he have said something so terrible? All she had wanted was to be a mother. When she lost the baby and the subsequent adoption of an infant had fallen through, Cuddy had been heartbroken. Instead of soothing her, he had insulted her. He didn't blame her for hating him. He really wasn't likable. Even so, he longed for her to love him. He didn't want to see her get married to another man. He wanted to stop the wedding.
He leaned on his slender cane just outside the chapel. His hand was on the door. He was about to walk in and bust up the wedding. *Stop! You can't marry him! You love me!" he wanted to scream.
But he didn't want her to glare at him and slap him. He had been an ASS, a complete and total jerk. He didn't deserve her love. He didn't even deserve a minute of her time.
"House, what are you doing?" his best friend Wilson asked right outside the chapel. "You can't go in there. You CAN'T stop the wedding."
House turned to look at James Wilson who was dressed in a tux. Obviously, he had just arrived for the wedding. No doubt everyone had been invited but him.
"I can't let her marry him," House stated. "She belongs with me. I love her."
"You sure have a funny way of showing it," Wilson said with a flash of anger. "She lost the baby. She was hurting... and all you could do was throw salt in her wounds."
"I know. I hate myself for it. I say things. Sometimes I don't mean them, not really. It's just that... I am hurting, too."
"Ohhh really? Why? Why would you be hurting?"
"Because I am a cripple... because I am an addict. Because I can never give Cuddy what it is she deserves. That doesn't mean that I don't love her. I DO love her, Wilson... and I gotta stop this wedding."
"I can't let you do it. Let her be happy. Let her move on."
"She's already moved on. Hasn't she? Word is, she's having his kid."
Wilson didn't say anything, just stared into his friend's bright blue eyes. No words were spoken. Sudden thoughts assaulted House. "Wait a second! How far along is she?"
Wilson had turned. He was about to enter the church. He grimaced as he looked at his friend. "Leave it alone, House. Don't do anything you will regret."
"The baby's mine, isn't it? Tell me!" he insisted.
Wilson didn't say a word... yet the answer was in his eyes. He walked into the church and sat down in the last pew. The wedding music began to play. The ceremony was soon to begin. It would have been a beautiful ceremony...
...Or it might of been.
