A/N: This is a songfic I wrote for the last few scenes of my fanfic "Ashes, Diamonds and Pearls" ages ago. I thought, seeing as people seemed to enjoy that story, I'd post this one as well :) (Talk about hubris) :P It's probably a little corny, but I hope you enjoy it anyway :) The song is from Disney's The Fox and the Hound.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Goodbye May Seem Forever

We met, it seems, such a short time ago

You looked at me - needing me so

Yet from your sadness

Our happiness grew

...

Dracula forced himself to remain leaning casually against the doorframe as he watched the abbot holding Tryphaena, a knife at her throat. It seemed like such a short time ago that she had come into his life; the trust in her eyes had caused him to bring her to live with him. The same trust shone in her eyes now as she looked at him, the trust that somehow he would get her out of her predicament. He made up his mind, he would save her, he had to save her, but he might not be so lucky.

...

And I found out I needed you too

I remember how we used to play

I recall those rainy days

The fire's glow

That kept us warm

And now I find - we're both alone

...

"They will not stop until I am gone, my darling, and then what would happen to you?" he watched the comprehension dawn on her face as she realised what he was really saying. He sighed and took her face in his hands, "Good bye, my dear one," he said. He regarded her for a long moment, remembering their life leading up to this moment. He thought about telling her that he loved her, but he stopped himself, why make this moment any harder than it already was? He contented himself with kissing her forehead before he turned and walked away. He did not look back. He couldn't. He knew that if he did he wouldn't have the strength the leave her.

Goodbye may seem forever

Farewell is like the end

But in my heart is a memory

And there you'll always be

...

"Master..." the sound of her voice broke his concentration for a moment and he glanced over to where she stood in the doorway to the main hall. A movement caught his eye and he only just managed to change shape and take flight, evading the werewolf's grasp; hovering above it he addressed her. "I thought I told you to leave," he said, a little harsher than he had intended, "I couldn't leave Master," she said, he looked over at her, realising both her physical and emotional difficulties. He would have said more but with one almighty lunge he was knocked to the ground by the werewolf. It had him pinned down by the throat, he looked over at Tryphaena, "Go, my angel…find peace," he choked out, reverting to his normal form. He did not want her last image of him to be in his guise as a monster.

She took a steadying breath before she opened her satchel to retrieve the ornate box that contained his ashes; opening the lid she allowed the wind to carry them away. "Good bye my Master," she whispered watching them until they were out of sight, "you're free now." She felt tears well in her eyes, but she would never be free of his memory, he would be with her always, deep in her heart, where he had always belonged.
