Disclaimer: I don't own Les Miserables. I found it odd that the inn keepers said that they treated Cosette like she was one of their own but they didn't even know her name. They called her Collette.
Let's not haggle for darling Collette... Cosette
"Wait a minute," Valjean asked, "How can you say how much she means to you and not even know her name."
"Well it has been a late night Monsiouner," Madame said.
"And if I had a child that was like one of my own I would never forget her name. You two are liars. If she really was like one of your own I would not have found her trembling in the woods. Children are not to be sent into the woods alone at night."
"She had misbehaved," Madame explained.
"Even if that is so," Valjean replied, "You do not put her life at risk to teach her to behave. That is abusive. Let me also point out that I don't believe for a minute that what you say is true. From the look of this child she doesn't have time to misbehave. You work her all day long."
"Well children need to work," Madame's husband said, "It teaches them values."
"Great well I'm taking her now," Valjean said handing them over a note Fantine signed releasing her to his care, "And she won't be learning the 'values' you have taught her."
There he took Cossette who imediately relaxed at his touch.
