James Potter was no stranger to getting girls. In fact, he was quite skilled. There was only one girl in all of Hogwarts who had yet to accept his advances and go on at least one date with him, and it was the only girl he really wanted. And that girl was one Lily Evans. He had wanted her to notice him since they first crossed paths on the train his first day to Hogwarts. It was a shame really that he had insulted that silly boy who had been with her. Since then, they'd done nothing but bicker even though he tried his hardest to get her to fall in love with him.
But now, there was absolutely no way that Lily would ever forgive him, or Snape. Sure, he had started it by picking on Snivellus with no cause, but it was right after that horridly long test, and he and his friends had been bored.
"Stop justifying yourself you idiot," He told himself as he quickly walked down the halls, looking for her. After what happened this afternoon, he knew he was being a moron to chase after her, but his heart told him he was right. That, and Lily had looked upset after Snape had called her a mud-blood. James had made him pay though. Snape wouldn't soon forget that embarrassment. James rounded a corner, and nearly ran into the same girl he had been searching for.
"Lily!" James said, "There you are. I'd been wondering where you went."
Lily looked away from him and brushed some of her fiery red hair back out of her face, " I don't need you to look after me, Potter." She replied
James shrugged and looked over at her and noticed that her eyes were the slightest bit red. He asked gently, "Lils, have you been crying?"
She huffed and started to walk away, and he reached out and grabbed her hand effectively keeping her from walking to far away "Let me go Potter!" Lily said, tugging her arm. James smiled and pulled her closer. Since he was stronger from quidditch, she was easily moved closer to him. James placed a finger under her chin and lifted her face so he could look into her eyes and asked again, "Lily, please tell me, have you been crying because of what happened earlier?" With that, her eyes began to water, and all her determination to get away crumpled as her shoulders slumped. James then had the strong desire to comfort her. He wrapped his arms around her frame and pulled her close.
"Lily, I am so very sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." James whispered.
Lily laughed quietly, "It's not your fault James. You weren't the one who called me that stupid name."
James held her closer and said, "Even still, I started it, and it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't started picking on Snape first. Believe me though, Lily, this was an accident. I didn't realize—"
"James," Lily said, "Shut up. I forgive you."
He grinned and loosened the hug, "Well, this might be a very impertinent time to ask, but Lily?"
"Yeah?" Lily asked, smiling a little as well, because his smile had always been contagious, even if she hadn't let him know before, or even let it show.
"Will you go out with me?" James laughed
Lily raised an eyebrow and started giggling, "Seriously James? Sure. I'll go out with you."
They both grinned like idiots at each other and headed toward the Gryffindor common room.
