The telephone in the hallway rang.
Ten rings later, the machine resounded.
"This is Kira Yamato. I'm not available at the moment, so please leave a message after the tone."
"Hey, Kira. Sorry I couldn't call sooner, I was, well, sleeping. Anyway, happy birthday to you!"—giggle—"And to me too, I guess. Thanks for the present! It's really nice, I especially asked them to put figures of us on top."—giggle—"Hey, let's meet up this weeke—shush!—weekend. Okay?—wait!—Listen, I've got a meeting on, I'll call you again as soon as I can, okay? See you!"

"…Beats me too…"

"…Torii?" Red mechanical eyes scanned the room.
Bed, blanket, pillow, table, couch, cup, comb, wardrobe, tie, shirt, dresser…
No sign of its owner.
It flew towards the living room, tilted its head when it saw the television, then flew in front of the door, landing near the shoes, and waited for a man to come home.
