He would often talk to her

He would often talk to her.

It was to be expected; while Haruhi had marched off leading the unwilling Kyon and Mikuru to some new crazy expedition, the other two were left quite unharmed, as their ready willingness to do as she asked didn't amuse her as much as forcing the other two around.

As such, they were often left in the back, and he would talk to her; not that she would respond, as such was her personality. She would listen, though, and he liked that about her.

Often times he would comment on Haruhi's mental state, or on the creation (or lack of) of closed space; fewer times he would comment on Kyon and Mikuru; and rarely, he simply commented on "how clear the sky looked." The weather.

There wasn't much to it; normally just one or two insightful remarks, unless he was asking her about a certain phenomenon, in which case she would answer lengthily and in full. However, despite it only being a single phrase, it somehow became almost routine whenever they were led on another one of Haruhi Suzumiya's adventures.

At current, they had been led into an amusement park, for the reasons that "only God knows why," as stated by Kyon, who didn't pay attention to his statement, thereby not realizing how very true it was.

Mikuru chattered with (or perhaps was terrified by; it was hard to tell) Tsuruya-san, and Haruhi had Kyon by his shirt, telling him something with a devilish expression on her face.

Itsuki watched the latter couple from his place, leaning on the fence next to Yuki, as they had been left alone yet again. His eyes fell as he watched Haruhi move expressedly; Kyon exasperatedly scolding her; and then watching as Kyon awkwardly smiled at Haruhi's pouting face.

"They seem... happy together... don't they?"

His tone was dark, and his words heavy. His expression forcedly black, he turned to her to find her speculative eyes also on God and her chosen one, her lips pressed shut before opening.

"Yes."

For the first time, she answered him.

He didn't need to ask why.

End

Inspired by episode 4/7 – the baseball episode. While Haruhi pulled Kyon aside to talk about his little sister being there, we get a shot of Yuki and Itsuki standing near each other at the fence, and it made me wonder. :o (Not to mention, there are a couple other times similar to that.) Also, I couldn't tell - did the ending become slightly sad like I wanted it to? D: Not totally angsty, just sorta refreshingly sad...? Am I even making sense? I dunno.
