The Jump

Waves crash below--too far, too far

Eyes narrowed at the water, heart beating behind a scar

A voice on the wind, a startle to life

Sharp intake of breath, a quick flash of light

Nails dig into palms, numb to the marks

A growl of warning, a fire of sparks

Every nerve on edge, blood racing through veins

A step toward the edge, the aching the same

A deliberate step, a mind made up

A relentless growl, one desperate jump
