Bai!

It was happening, again, the nightmares. The white coats strapping me down to the cold stainless steel table, injecting me with who knows what and cutting me open everywhere imaginable The white lights of the operating room glared down on me and I could hear everybody, screaming, pleading, begging me to help them, to save them. I could hear their shrieks of pain and anguish, and someone was sobbing in the distance. They were hurting us, tearing us away from each other. Again, hands reached into the cramped cage, dragging me out for more tests, more experiments, to cut me open again, to examine me like a sick science experiment…

I woke with a strangled yell, gasping for breath and covered in sweat. Panicking, I looked around the room, my room. I took in my empty room, hardly anything but my closet and small widow with a thin slit of moonlight shining through. I sat up trying to slow my facing heart, fighting the urge to run over to Angel and Nudge's room to stay the night with them. I pulled my knees up to my chest whispering to myself, "I'm safe, we're all safe, our whole family, Fang, Iggy, Angle, Nudge, and Gazzy. We're not at the School anymore, we're safe up here in the mountains." I hid my face in my knees, trying not to think about the time we were imprisoned at the School.

I jumped a little when I heard a soft knock on my door, "Max?" someone asked quietly and to my surprise, Fang opened the door and stepped inside. "F-fang?" I stuttered, surprised, "What are you doing here?" He never left his room at night. "I heard you yell, are you okay?" he asked, he walked closer, stopping at the foot of my bed. He looked carefully at my face and understanding flickered though his dark eyes. "You had a nightmare about the school didn't you?"
He shook his head and held up a hand, "There's no need to pretend, we all have them," Fang said with a grimace, "even me." He sighed, "I just wanted to check and make sure your okay. I'll leave if you want to sleep," he said, turning to towards the door. "No!" I said suddenly, grabbing his hand before he could move farther away, "I mean… Don't leave, stay for a while. Please?" He turned back towards me and sat down on the bed.

"Fang… what if the Erasers came to our home? What if they found us?" He looked at me solemnly, "We'd run. You and I would protect the others and we'd watch each other's backs." I dropped my head onto my knees. "I'm scared Fang. I'm scared of the white coats and the Erasers coming back and killing our family. If that happens, I'll be alone… I'm scared to be alone Fang…"

"Hey," he elbowed me and I looked up slowly into his dark eyes. "We're all scared, it's normal. If they come, well, we'll run. If they catch us we'll fight. Nobody's going to be alone anytime soon." I sighed, "Promise?" He gave one of his rare smiles. "Promise." I reached out my arm and formed a fist with my hand, he did the same and we knocked our fists together. "Fang," I murmured sleepily, "Just one more thing,"

Fang turned his head slightly "What is it Max?" Slowly, he reached over and tucked a small stand of hair behind her ear, "I'll always be there for you Max… I love you." He bent over and kissed her softly on her forehead and whispered, "Goodnight." They fell asleep just like that, sitting together on the bed, their heads leaning against each other.
