Important to the understanding of the story: Last chapter was just to give you a taste of what the story will be like, you will have noticed I changed the year of which the story takes place, reason one is after researching I realized I set the story in the wrong time period, another reason is this chapter takes place 5 years before when the last one would have taken place. Please note that any events that happened last chapter may or may not happen later in the story, like I said that was more of just a preview of what I'll try to make this story be like. I hope you like and please review so I know how I'm doing! :)
"Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop." –Lewis Carroll.
Halloween 1349
"Witches are out tonight, you must return soon my sons. Do not waste time, for once the sun sets, witches will come and take any children left on the streets. They come from the forests, they come for the children, they come to kill and kidnap the children, you must hurry my sons. Hurry through the night and fetch the water, hurry fast…"
Brick runs with his brothers from the church into the heart of town, their 'father' is sick and in need of water. Their mother can not fetch it for she must look after the 'father.' At thirteen the brothers know much about witches, they know they eat children, steal men's souls, they kidnap young girls and raise them as witches, they ruin lives with their magic, they worship and work for the devil, they are sinful and evil, they are not to be trusted, they must be killed. This is what they were taught by their mother and 'father,' but tis not what they believe. Their father maybe elsewhere but his blood runs through their veins, his ideas pollute their minds, they heed his words of 'wisdom,' though their mother begs them to pay him no mind. So even after all the warnings from their mother, the brothers dwindle, taking their time as the sun sets on the small town, favoring their father's ideals over their mother's. They reach the water well just as the sun disappears and the moon rises.
"Hurry, brother, we mustn't worry mother," Brick commands his younger brother, Butch, as he cranks the lever pulling the bucket of water to them. Boomer looks warily down the road, slightly doubting their father now that it is dark.
Butch pulls the bucket up and him and Brick pour the water into their own bucket, Butch lowers the lever,
"Come, it is done. Mother will worry if we're not back soon," he says starting to walk toward the church. Brick follows him but Boomer doesn't. He is transfixed by the sight of something, his eyes unmoving.
"Boomer, brother, we must go," Brick demands. Boomer does nothing, Brick sighs,
"Butch, knock his sense back into him," Butch smirks cracking his knuckles as he approaches his brother. He hits him upside the head causing a loud whack to echo trough the town. Boomer blinks rapidly, breathing heavily,
"Witches..." he whispers to his brothers, "Witches, there!" exclaims pointing down the road. His brothers turn pale at the sight of them, 2 beings in the night. One clearly a witch, her red hair wavy and long, covering her entire face. The other being the brothers are unable to see, tis merely a moving shadow, a demon perhaps. The brothers fear not demons, but Witches are a different story. The witch moves slowly, humming a small melody. The music drifts through the town, calling to the children, begging them to come and follow, begging them to come to their death. It seems the brothers were not the only children out at this night.
16 children came, of different ages and genders. The Witch smiles at them happily in a sinister way. 3 girls practically have her attention, three young girls. One with red hair a little lighter in shade from hers, one with blonde hair brighter than the sun, and one with black hair as dark as the night. She pulls the girls closer to her as she sings, letting the words drift into the children's minds and hearts. She walks slowly away from the town, the children and the shadow being following her as they head into the forest.
The brothers stare after them in fear, worry, and confusion.
"She's not going to eat the children, is she? Witches don't really do that, do they?" Butch asks in concern. He saw many a friend follow the Witch into the woods.
"They'll come back, won't they brothers? Won't they?" Boomer asks, his eyes lost in the woods hoping he'll see his friends in town tomorrow and that this is all a bad dream. Brick looks from the place where the witch once stood to the woods, over and over, moving his head quickly. He frowns,
"Why did her magic have no affect on us?" he asks no one in particular. Boomer frowns also,
"I do not know… Perhaps father will know," he suggests. Butch growls,
"I hate talking to father, must we ask him? Perhaps her magic did not work on us for she did not cast it on us, perhaps we were too far away," he suggests avoiding having to talk with their father. Brick shakes his head,
"She cast her magic on everyone and children from the other side of town came, we were just down the road, her magic should have worked on us," he explains. Butch grips their water bucket,
"We should return to mother, she will be sickly worried by this time," he states starting down the road to the church. Boomer sighs,
"Perhaps we should ask mother about this before father," he suggests as the brothers walk slowly toward the church. Brick glances at his younger brother for a moment,
"You do not think that will worry her?" he questions. Boomer shrugs,
"We shall have to tell her of tonight's events eventually, why not as soon as tis possible?" he says truthfully. They round the next corner in silence,
"We are here," Butch says walking into the church, Brick and Boomer follow behind him.
"Mother, we are here," Brick calls into the cathedral. Their mother rushes foreword,
"My dears, my dears, you live! Thank the heavens! What has happened? I told thee to hurry, what took thee so long, my sons?" she cries hugging them tightly. The brothers pull out of her embrace with ease,
"Mother, we are fine…Though, we have some concerns," Brick says carefully. Their mother nods,
"Anything, but first, let me put your father to rest," she says grabbing the bucket of water. Butch growls softly,
"Tis not our father. He is a man, your husband. He is nothing to us," he mutters bitterly. Their mother does not hear as she rushes to her husband's bed side. Once she is out of the room, Boomer frowns at his brother,
"He has been well to us, brother. Thou should not cast him out so, he has done nothing but protect us," he scolds. Butch glares at Boomer,
"Protect us? He tried to thy father! He does not love us, he sees us as abominations!" he shouts in protest. Boomer clenches his fist and closes his eyes tightly holding back tears,
"How can you say that? He does love us! He has too! We are loved, brother! We are!" he screams. "We have to be loved, we have to be," he whispers falling to his knees in sadness. Butch softens his glare, realizing the vulnerability within his youngest brother. Brick exchanges glances with Butch before walking toward his now crying brother,
"You needth not cry, my brother," he whispers patting his back comfortingly. Butch comes toward him as well,
"You are right, my brother. We are loved, if not by our parents than by each other. Do not cry, do not cry," he whispers. Boomer stands slowly, he wipes his eyes hastily,
"I am sorry, brothers," he whispers. Butch smiles,
"You needth not be sorry, my brother, for it is I who should be begging forgiveness," he says. Boomer laughs slightly, he looks toward where they're mother rushed off too,
"What is taking her so long? She said she will answer our concerns," he sighs. Brick looks toward the door with a blank expression,
"She is occupied with the man's sickness, the towns folk call it the black death. Tis apparently very deadly." He explains to his brothers. Boomer frowns,
"But what of us?" he asks. Butch sighs putting an arm around each of his brother in a rare show of affection,
"We have each other," he whispers. His brothers are silent in agreement.
"We should go to sleep, my brothers," Brick says walking toward their straw beds down the hall. His brothers follow.
They rest their heads trying to get some rest before the morning…. Tis not possible on Halloween Eve.
"MY SONS! YOU MUST AWAKEN!" A man in bright red clothing exclaims, rudely awakening the brothers from their short rest. Butch glares at his father with pure hatred,
"What is it you want, father?" he questions. Their father smiles widely,
"Tis early yet on your thirteenth Halloween, is it not? Why are thee resting?" he asks them, ignoring Butch's question completely. Brick frowns at his father,
"We must rest, we have many chores come the morn," he explains in monotone. Their father smirks at them,
"You shall rest later, you must come now," he says indicating to the door. Boomer frowns,
"But what of mother? She will worry, will she not?" he asks. Their father looms over them,
"What of your mother? She is too worried of her dear husband to even answer a few of your concerns… I can answer your concerns... I love you, my sons," he whispers sinisterly. The brothers exchange glances, Brick looks up at their tall father,
"Fine, we shall come." He answers, their father smiles,
"Excellent! This way, my sons," he says leading them out of the church, they blend into the shadows of the town, the brothers sneaking with ease as if they have done so their whole life. Their father leads them into the woods, deeper and deeper they walk, the moon lighting their way through the shadows.
Finally, their father stops at an old run down house.
"This is it, my sons. This is it…" he whispers letting them inside. Boomer looks around the house cautiously,
"What are we here for, father?" he asks. Their father smiles,
"You shall see… What are your concerns?" he asks changing the subject.
"Why are we immune to Witch magic?" Brick asks standing beside Boomer, their father smirks,
"Ah, yes…hm, do you really wish to know?" he asks, "if you say yes I will tell you, but understand this, you may not like all that you hear," he sings in a warning. Butch glares at him,
"Just tell us all ready you bloody git!" he yells. Their father smirks at him,
"Ah… Father son relationships, so touching to the heart… Well, to put it bluntly, you are demons." The brothers stare at him in confusion,
"What?" Butch questions.
"Demons, abominations, sinned folk, evil shadow beings, just as I am. It's quite simple, you see, I have lived for hundreds of years and had many a son and even a couple daughters all of which were killed before their thirteenth Halloween. You see, on a demon's thirteenth Halloween, they gain their powers, blood thirst, shadow abilities, and their corrupt soul and mind. Happy thirteenth Halloween!" he says with a smile. Brick crosses his arms,
"So what you are saying tis we are demons, the kind children have nightmares of, and so are you? And now that it tis our 13th Halloween, we shall gain powers such as you described?" he questions. Their father nods smiling widely. Boomer screams.
"I DON'T WANT TO BE A MONSTER!" He shouts to the depths of the forest. Butch smacks his head,
"Hush, Boomer. Listen, perhaps there is a way out of this," he says. Their father smiles wider,
"Oh, there was. Tis too late now," he sings. Brick glares at him,
"Than what twas our way out of this?" he questions. Their father smiles,
"Well, if you were to die by your 13th Halloween, you would never get your powers and die an honest mortal…Also" he smirks sinisterly, "if I had died by this day, your 13th Halloween, your demon blood would never awaken and you would live your entire life as an honest, weak, foolish mortal." He says wickedly. Butch stares at his father in astonishment,
"You mean… When our mother's husband tried to kill you…" he trials off,
"He was trying to keep you from becoming demons, yes," his father finishes. Brick groans,
"We were foolish to think we could not trust him, he is a good man," he says bitterly. Boomer looks worriedly at his father,
"Is there any other way to reverse this demon blood?" he asks. His father smiles at him,
"My sons, if you three were to kill me, each kill one witch, worship God excessively, and never have sex by midnight on your 18th Halloween, your demon blood will wither and die and you will be mortal. If you do not do all of that, you will remain a half demon…" he sighs, "cruse your mother for being mortal…" he mutters. Brick looks at his father in surprise,
"You mean, we are only half demons?" he asks. His father nods,
"Yes, your mother is a mortal, you have mixed blood…for now. If by midnight on your 18th Halloween, you three kill your mother, each make love to a witch, each kill 2 innocent mortals, and use your demon gifts excessively your mortal blood will become overpowered by your demon blood and you will be a full demon such as I." he explains. Butch looks at his hands in wonder,
"We have demon blood? We possess the ability to be a monster? A powerful monster?" he questions in awe. Their father smiles wickedly,
"Yes, you do… And tonight! You get half of your power and abilities!" He shouts excitedly. Butch smirks darkly,
"I think I might like this," he mutters. Brick and Boomer place a hand on his shoulder,
"Brother, calm yourself," Brick commands.
"Do not enjoy the power, lest it consumes you," Boomer warns. Butch nods placing his arms at his sides,
"You are right, brothers, my apologizes. Father…We will not be like you, we will never be monsters," he states sure of himself. Their father smirks,
"Fine, see you when thee tries to kill myself," he says carelessly. Brick sneers at him,
"Indeed, father." He states darkly. The three brothers make their way to the door, just as they open it, their father calls after them,
"Remember my sons, battle not with monsters, lest you become one," he ends with an evil laugh. Brick slams the door behind him angrily as the brothers head out into the shadows of the forest.
They arrive at the church as the sun starts to rise. Boomer sighs as mothers of the kidnapped children rush about looking franticly for children they will never see again. Their own mother rushes toward them in a hug,
"There you are, my sons! Thank God you are safe!" she shouts. Brick pushes her away from them harshly,
"Don't fool with us woman, you knew about father!" he accuses. Their mother looks at the three worriedly,
"So, it's happened than? You three are…?" she trails off, not daring to utter the word.
"Yes mother, we are demons," Boomer answers. Their mother shakes her head in disbelief as tears graze her cheeks,
"My sons! Dear God my sons," she mumbles in hysteria.
"Yes, mother, we know everything! Why father told us not to worry about Witches, it wasn't that they were good it was they would never want to nor have the ability to take a child with demon blood. We know why your husband tried to kill father, he didn't want us to be monsters. How long were you expecting to hide this from us?" Butch asks. Their mother dries her eyes slightly,
"I don't know…I know it twas foolish, I knew this would happen, there twas no avoiding it… But you are my sons…" she whispers. Brick looks at her emotionlessly,
"Goodbye, mother." He states plainly. His mother looks at him in pain,
"No, Brick, please, my son," she begs. He turns away from her,
"Come, my brothers. We can not step on holy ground with our awakened blood, we must move elsewhere. Away from town and everyone in it, lest our blood lust consume us" he says. His brothers nod.
"I know of an abandoned house, Mitch and I found it, we can live there," Butch suggests. Brick nods,
"Let us go," He agrees, Butch starts leading his brothers to their apparent new home.
"NO! Brick, Butch, Boomer! My sons! My dears! You are not monsters!" she screams after them. The three brothers freeze in their steps, the sky turns darker, their shadows grow taller. They turn to face their mother, their eyes glowing a dark blue, green, and red, their teeth sharp and pointed, their hands like claws, their tongues dry begging for the taste of blood.
"Yes we are."
