Challenge - Angel, Vacant, Doll

Angel stared out the window with a vacant expression on his face. He wasn't sure why he had came back here, again, but something had drawn him here and he couldn't fight it.

None of the scoobies new that he was back here in Sunnydale, and he planned to keep it that way, but then again he'd tried that last time and it hadn't worked, but then again this time he wasn't in Sunnydale because of Buffy.

He'd just spent time locked up in a cage as Angelus once more and that had unlocked feelings in him again, feelings for those he had sired.

Well, one in particular, Lawson didn't really count, and Penn, Penn was gone with the wind, dust to dust.

Drusilla though, she was the one he missed. Everyone had always underestimated her, that was part of the reason Angelus had chosen her, but it was more than just her wacky sense of humour and her visions that he missed.

He couldn't place it, couldn't place exactly what he missed, but it was there and in her own way she would already know.

He stared at the doll he held in his hands, it wasn't Miss. Edith, he knew that, Drusilla would never put her down for long enough to lose her, but it was another one, another of her prized possessions.

She couldn't have been that crazy though, she had sired Spike, the shy, whimpering little poet and she had seen something in him that everyone else had missed, he had been shocked when he had seen her choice but as the years went on and he had trained the boy something wasunlocked within him and he became almost as brutal and ruthless when it came to killing as he had been himself.

Not that it had done either of them much good, they both had ended up with souls and fighting the good fight for one girl, but maybe it wasn't the girl that evryone else had presumed it was.

Maybe, just maybe, they weren't trying to prove themselves to Buffy, but maybe it was to the one woman they had both loved and lost. She wouldn't have judged on the way they were fighting for redemption, she would have known that they were doing it for their own reasons.

Drusilla had understood most people a lot better than they had ever understood themselves and maybe that was the problem. He had been fighting in the world for the wrong reason, the wrong girl and he had lost himself in love as he was doing it.

Slowly Angel stood up and placed the doll carefully back in its place before leaving the Crawford street mansion behind him forever. He wasn't going to come back here again, and he wasn't going to go back to Buffy again he was going to look forward.

Angel's head felt clear for the first time since the soul as he made his way back to L.A, his life ahead of him, he knew how it was all going to work and with that last thought Angel smiled, he smiled as he clutched his heart as he fell to the ground in a once more familiar position and he smiled as for the last time ever his soul left him. He smiled when he whispered a name.
