This is a little oneshot I wrote forever ago and just never got around to posting here! Hope you enjoy!
Elsie padded through the kitchen and stood on her tiptoes to get the large glass platter. She grabbed at it and suddenly she stumbles and now, now he is surrounded with broken glass and her left leg has blood trickling down it but she cannot move because she is barefoot.
Tears stream down her face because that was her mothers platter. It had made the move from Argyll to London and now due to her clumsiness it's shattered into a billion bits. So she sobs because she doesn't have that much from her mum and this was one thing she loved the most.
She hears the door open and close and knows that Charles is home from work. So when he stops dead in his tracks at the entrance of the kitchen he takes in the sight before him and his eyes soften immediately. He strides over and scoops her up and takes her upstairs to the bathroom. He sits her on the bathroom counter and cleans her cuts, takes the rather large shard of glass out of her leg, and puts a bandage on it.
He slides her out of the clothes she was in and puts her in her pajamas. Then he carries her to bed as a fresh wave of tears start. He promises his return and then goes down to clean the mess.
When he returns she looks at him with sad eyes and he shrugs out of his clothes and cuddles up beside her. She explains which platter it was and he nods and presses kisses to her forehead.
He holds her until she drops off to sleep and then gets back up to finish cleaning and he's not throwing the glass away he will let her do that, when she comes to terms with it. Because he knows it's more than just her mother's platter.
It's her past. It's her promise to take care of Becky. It's her ties to her family that make her who she is, and she has very few symbols of that past, and this one was special. This one was precious. Almost as precious as the lukenbooth she wears around her neck that has been passed down from mother to daughter.
So, she will cry. And he will let her, because he knows this isn't about the platter. Not really. It's about things that break and cannot be fixed. It's about not being able to really do anything about it.
She will cry and she will heal. And he will be there to support her and love her through this.
Let me know what you think!
Much love,
Samantha
