And like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there cause it's getting harder and harder to breathe
-Maroon 5 "Harder to Breathe"

Tenten has ever been a patient woman. She takes things in stride, meets danger with a cheerful smile, and rarely lets things affect her too badly.

Being weak is not an option; in battle, fears have to be set aside. Nothing can risk the outcome of the mission, not even the lives of she and her teammates. It is something she has always understood, because it has always been drilled into her brain, even as a child. She is brave, but she is not fearless.

Neji knows this very well.

That is why, late at night, when he hears her whimpering in her sleep, tossing and turning from her nightmare, he simply drapes and arm over her and murmurs into her hair. This is not a mission, this is not a battle, this is not a training session, so she is allowed to have her little fears.

On their next mission, she dives into the cold water in order to save one of her students. None of the others think anything of it, but he can see her shivering and shaking—he knows that as soon as they get home she will revert back to her hydrophobia with unconscious ease. He won't ask any questions when she leaves the bathroom door wide open as she steps into the bathtub, or when she asks him to boil water for tea. It is routine, and if she finds some comfort in it then he won't say anything.

When she sees the water-disfigured face of her mother in dreams, when she feels the river current wash over her in her sleep, when she feels her lungs screaming for oxygen…

He will be there to protect her from her demons.
