It was inevitable. It always had been.

Science held the answers and the possible cures. But science also held the explanation: genetic pre-disposition. His fate loomed in his head, dooming him, damning his future, and anything else he longed for in this life.

It was the reason why he never married, although that was half of an argument he didn't always believe in. It was the reason why he never had any children, despite not having been married. What woman would want that sacrifice? Perhaps it was the excuse he had come to believe in; disjointed reasoning that had turned into the truth.

He was toxic - tainting anyone and everyone who came into contact with him, dooming their existence right along with his. This curse, this spell, had already destroyed his tiny family, taken away his mentor and almost ruined his career. Doom has been cast; dead in three turns. He had only one thing left that would fight for him. Fragile and precious, he clung to her like she would evaporate in front of him.

It was inevitable. It always had been.

She knew early on that she needed out of this partnership, that her career would never flourish the way she wanted it to unless she got out. She was doomed otherwise, and everyone around her agreed with her.

Get out now and there will be some hope for you. Take a hint from everyone else and what everyone's already done and leave him now. Leave him to his fate, this doomed piece of flesh. Leave the chaos that he created, the darkness that followed him everywhere he went, and latched on to who ever else was near.

They were excuses that everyone else used. Had used, will use, is using...

The excuses that even he him self had used on the occasion. Keep everyone away. Keep everyone at bay. That way they can't blame me when the world ends.

She knew that she had to get out of their partnership but she didn't believe in his, or anyone else's excuses. She didn't trust them, nor did she trust his reasoning at times. So she stayed. Dooming herself to his fate. Accepting his as her own.

And he trusted her to do so.

It was inevitable. It always had been.

He pulled the blankets over her body as if he could insulate her from the chaos that threatened them outside his bed. The room was chilly, but they were both warm, wrapped up in the sheets on his bed, together in his arms. She smiled as he pulled her closer. Her sigh left goosebumps on his chest.

"I'm glad you're here", he whispered.

"So am I."

"No, I mean, I'm glad that you never left."

"So am I."

He smiled and held her closer still, hoping against hope that everything would be alright in the end. That his doomed existence would not find him here, in this most holiest of places. That she could somehow save him from this fate.

She smiled as his arms tightened around her body, hoping against hope that everything would be alright in the end. That she could ignore what all the other voices kept telling her here, in this most holiest of places. That she hadn't doomed herself along side him. That as long as she held on to him, and he to her, everything would be alright.

It was all they had to hope for.

A/N : This was written for LJ's Thursday's 100 Plus Doom Challenge. I tried to make doom as hopeful as possible.
