He had promised himself that he would not try to approach her in this era. Whatever it was that he and Kagome had had was 500 years in the past. As far as she knew, there were no youkai left in this time. Sometimes, though, it was hard to keep this promise. Whenever his work brought him to Tokyo, even through the cloud of pollution and diesel fuel, he imagined that he could smell Kagome's scent. One time he even went so far as to approach the Higurashi shrine. He stood at the bottom of the steps for a long time, just staring up at the shrine, remembering it as it had been and thinking about her. He bid a hasty retreat (though not so hasty as to appear inhuman) when an old man came to sweep the steps and asked him what he was doing. It wasn't just the fact that he didn't want to look suspicious that sent him running, though. The old geezer had Kagome's scent on him, and combined with the smell of the shrine...he had to leave before he went against his promise against his better judgement.
Then again, Kouga had never had the best judgment. He had always lept into things without thinking too hard about them. He vaguely wondered how he had survived this long, when many others of his kind had not. He thought, guiltily, that he really shouldn't have. He didn't deserve to continue on when his kind had been hunted and poisoned. He should have taken their death for them, jumped in front of a blow, done something. Maybe that's why, no matter how much he promised himself, he was drawn to Kagome. Because so many things were gone, but she was still here, still okay.
*cough cough*, uh, about that, Kouga…
I considered scrapping this idea...because I honestly believe that Kouga would just have gone down with the rest of the wolves. It would be like him to give it his all to protect them, certainly even at the cost of his own life. But then I decided, what the heck, I haven't posted anything new in awhile, and I only have one Inuyasha story despite how much I love the show. So, R&R.
