Chapter 1
It was a quiet day at the Z.P.D. and Officer Benjamin Clawhauser, a chubby cheetah with a love for sweets, was humming while looking through Mammal Magazine at the Admissions Desk. The page he was on had a picture of his idol: Gazelle the pop star.
"Oh Gazelle, you're such an angel," he sighed with a smile as his tail curled a little. He hummed one of her songs to himself, but was soon startled by the loud slap of a folder landing in front of him.
"Clawhauser, I need you to give this to Mrs. Lin in conference room one," said his boss, a large buffalo named Chief Bogo. He was a gruff male who seemed to be annoyed 99% of the time. Only Clawhauser knew of his rare soft spot from how long they worked together.
"Lin? The lawyer from the Sensitive Cases Department? What's she doing here?" Benjamin asked curiously. It was rare to have cases that involved the S.C.D.
"I can't say. Just bring this to her and please clean off those sprinkles," Bogo sighed as he looked at the colorful pieces of sugar that covered the cheetah's face. The cat laughed nervously and cleaned his face before rushing towards the conference room. Well, rushed as well as he could sense his weight slowed him down a little. When he got to the room on the second floor, he had to catch his breath before he opened the door. Inside was an official looking horse with a brief case.
"Hey Mrs. Lin, I have a file for you," Clawhauser said with a smile, still breathing slightly heavier than usual.
"Oh thank you Officer Clawhauser," Lin said with a smile and turned towards him. It was then the feline saw the other mammal in the room. It was a short female deer no older than 25. She was timid looking in her large sweater that was two sizes too big on her. She looked up at him with green eyes that looked glazed over. She had an aura of depression about her that even made Clawhauser lose his smile for a moment. Lin noticed his stare and cleared her throat.
"This is Emily McCarthy. She and I will be here for the next few days working on her case. Emily, this is Officer Benjamin Clawhauser," Lin said with a soft smile. The cheetah smiled again and went to shake her hand, but as he did, she quickly stood up and backed into the corner. Her glazed eyes were now wide with fear and she was hyperventilating.
"Whoa! I-I'm sorry," Benjamin said as he raised both his hands and stepped back to show he meant no harm. The deer calmed down, with the help of her lawyer, but still looked at the cat with nervous eyes.
"Um, I'll be down stairs if you need me. Nice meeting you, Miss McCarthy," Clawhauser said awkwardly, not knowing what to do so he thought it best to give her space. He closed the door and headed back to his desk.
"Was it something I said?" he asked himself as he took one looked back before walking away.
