My 6th grade essay for the book FOUR PERFECT PEBBLES.
The topic was the negatives of wearing the Star of David.:
I am in a box.
Every day, the box gets smaller.
It used to be that everyone was in the same box, but now we're all apart.
They painted my box yellow. I now stand out in the shadows that we're all in.
That is a passage from my mind.
Hitler, the name I'd spit at were it not for my fear,
has taken out rights away, slowly, and now has singled us out for torture .
I'd be proud of the star we wear,
but the scorn and pity I see in the faces of the passer-by takes its toll and I am ashamed of my heritage.
They are stifling us, one by one, letting the minions do as they please to us.
My mama's shops have been left empty, for the symbol she has sewn on, scares away the customers.
My papa was beaten by the Nazis because of the star, and my brother is no more.
The yellow star has taken our hope away and it is taking lives, too.
I am small, but I am still proud.
I am Jewish.
I will wear the Star of David forever.
