Everybody's Fool
There was a charmingly perfect grace to her movements. Her face glowed, a sun to his world. The words from her lips flowed and reached his ears in that oh so soothing tone, a melody he hummed to himself and danced to alone. A smile, stable and permanent, anchored him to her logic.
Perfection incarnate.
And yes, he, much like everyone else, had swallowed the performance hook, line, and sinker. With no trace of doubt, he'd announced she couldn't have betrayed them. With no trace of doubt, he was on her side.
If no one else believed, he would.
Call it infatuation.
Call it naivety.
Or credulousness.
Or simply trust.

It was a wake-up call like no other. One lie was all it took to open his eyes to the world. A lie that refused to tumble down her lips until it was too late for either of them.
At that moment–the crumbling of the wall–it suddenly struck him that it never was and never would have been. Oddly enough, he'd never considered disappointment. He wanted them too much. The reflection in those chestnut orbs only confirmed it. They stared and reached for another.
Just like that he was invisible. His face reflected victory, while his eyes tried hard to not look broken and defeated.
He could only stare, clench his jaw, stare.
Crystalline tears cascaded down ivory cheeks and her thin form quivered. She sobbed.
He wished he could've, too, because she was still so damn perfect. He felt inferior, in tatters, like he should be bowing down. Oh, how he loved her, loved her flawlessness, loved her pretense.
Apologies echoed, empty and meaningless. She didn't know. She was sorry for what she thought she'd done. She didn't know how she'd betrayed him. And somehow, that was okay for everyone else.
Without the mask, where will you hide?
What was left of the one he'd ardently believed in? He couldn't find her anymore in that familiar face, and he doubted that she could find herself.
I know the truth.
He knew who she was and who she pretended to be.
I don't love you anymore.
He was deceived and she was tainted, but he couldn't decide which one of them was the bigger fool.
Well, that's where it ends. Review?
