He is full of nothing but jealousy.
Potter and Evans are standing side-by-side, arms linked and laughing. As he watches, Potter extracts his arm and loops it around Evans's waist and she tucks herself into his side, looking nothing short of content.
She looks gorgeous tonight. She always does. It's like a halo hovers over her head constantly, bathing her in a glow of beauty. And in the muted lights of the party, it is enhanced to the point that there's no accurate word to describe her.
Oh, how he wishes to be at her side, to be gazed at adoringly with two orbs of brilliant emerald. Instead, he is swathed by another shade of green-envy.
His own date is nettlesome and whiny. She desires attention, like a newborn baby. He detests her. She is nothing more than an irksome pest.
His attention is fixated on the "it" couple. Potter and Evans. Evans and Potter. Quidditch star and Head Boy, with the intellectual and stunning Head Girl. Anybody could've foreseen this. It was inevitable.
His date tugs his arm, moaning about her thirst. He tells her to go get herself a drink. She asks if he will come with her. He says no. She shoots him a dirty look and stomps off. He thinks it's a good riddance.
Evans is alone, surprisingly. She's standing by the refreshments table, sniffing her food and poking it with a spoon. When she's satisfied that it hasn't been tampered with, she takes a bite. A smile of delight spreads across her cherry lips.
He wants to talk to her so desperately. There are so many things left unsaid between them, even after two years of avoiding each other in the halls and striking up new relationships.
He wants to tell her he thinks she's breathtaking. He wants to confess his feelings for her. He's madly in love with her, but she's in love with someone else.
She's in love with Potter.
She denies it vehemently, but he can see it consuming her heart, her mind, her soul, and lastly her eyes. It's what happened with him, so he can recognize the symptoms.
And everyone knows Potter's head-over-heels for her. He underwent the same process, but a few years later than him. And yet, he's the one who wins her heart.
What about me? he thinks hopelessly.
He's an outcast. He used to think he was a part of real group, with Mulciber and Avery and Nott, but he's not. He's just their pawn, their toy.
He has never belonged. His heart wishes and longs to be nurtured, after years of neglect from an alcoholic father and a timid mother. Evans was the beacon of hope he had, and now that has vanished. He's pretending to be someone he's not, but really, he's just a shattered man. He may put on this false bravado, but he wants to scream and curse Potter to no end. He's not Severus Snape, Death Eater, but Severus Snape, loveless and envious.
No one could save him from this cruel fate.
