Prologue:

a/n: I'm starting this with a prologue because prologues are short, and I like that you don'q have to make them super long. Anyhow, this is kind of like the first chapter, but it is a lot shorter! So, yeah. Alrighty, lt's do xff

Disclaimer: Divergent doesn't belong to medd

Prologue:

Tris POV

George Wu is dead. George was Tori Wu's brother, Tori being the principal here. George was the teacher of eighth grade science, while I teach eighth grade math. We worked closely to make sure our lessons coinsided. He was one of my best friends.

All of us teachers at Dauntless Middle School are a tight-knit group. Our school isn't that big—we only have one teacher per subject per grade—only one eighth grade science teacher, for example—and no real special education program, because our town is too small. Instead, a handful of us teachers teach special education. I'm one of the vaulenteers, and handle math, and science. The other vaulenteer on our hall is Will James, who teaches eighth grade social studies. He does reading and social studies.

We only have nineteen teachers. Tori doubles as art and music teacher, since both are electives.

We don't have a library. We do have a cafeteria, but it is very small, and manned by two old ladies, who leave right after their shift ends, and don't arrive a minute earper than they have to. I only know one of their names—Sharol. So, when George died in a car accident, we were all caught off guard. Not only do we now have to scramble for another teacher qualified to teach secondary education, but we have to calm down our middle school of 600 students. We have about two hudred per grade, and eight periinds to our day. The math all checks out, so we've never hired before. Now, our school is trying to figure out who to hire. We went through five teachers last month alone.

"We have to do something." Lauren Baker says, staring at us. Lauren teaches seventh grade English. "What do you suggest?" asks Christina Lowe, my best friend, who teaches sixth grade social studies.

"There's this guy." Lauren begins, shifting her weight around awkwardly. "His name's Four. Four Eaton. He's new to Divergent County, and needs a job. He's qualified for secondary education, and he taught science back where he came from. He came from Faction County."

Tori nods, takes the information from Lauren, and smiles at the rest of us. "Does that sound good to you?" We all nod, and Tori ajerns us.

When I pull up outside my home, I notice moving vans pulling into the house next door, and a man hopping out. He's tall, with broad shoulders, and a muscular build. He turns around, and I see his eyes.

They are blue, like the color of the ocean. I shake my head, rolling my eyes at my stupidity. I should be focusing more on mx family.

Alex, our babysitter, smiles when she severs me. I smile back, and thank her, then pay her for watching the kids.

Sasha, Melissa, and Kendal all come downstairs. Sasha is the oldest, at ten. I had her when I was eighteen. Me and my ex-husband, Al, said we'd raise the kid together, but then Al and I ended up getting a divorce after having eight-year-old Melissa, and six-year-old Kendal. He had an affair with another woman, and I couldn't live with that, so I told him we had to get a divorce. Soon after, ; killed himself.

Sasha remembers the day I told her that Daddy was dead. She was six at the time, but that's not something you're bound to forget. She's the only one I told. Melissa never knew her father. He didn't really take part in the kids' lives after the divorce, so we just never mensioned him to her.

I hug my kids, and head into the kitchen to fix some dinner. I set the plates down, and call my kids into the kitchen.

TIME SKIP:

Tori hired Four, who just happs to be my new next-door neighbor. He starts next year, on the first day of school. I wave goodbye to my eighth-graders, and pull one of them, named Rachel, aside.

"Rachel, my babysitter, Alex, will leave for college after summer break. Sasha will be old enough to take care of herself, but my other kids are nine and seven, and they need someone to take care of them after school. Would you be interested?"

Rachel nods, and I leave. Alex and I say goodbye, and I give her her last monthly pay check, and I am about to head back inside, when I notice a tall, curvy girl emerge from the house next door. She has long, brown hair, and sparkling dark eyes. She must be Mrs. Eaton.

The girl walks over, and extends a hand to me. "Hello. I'm Caroline Eaton. I'm Four's oldest. I'll be in eighth grade."

"Hi! I'm Tris. I'll have you next year if you're going to Daunless."

Caroline nods, smiling. "Dad told us he's teaching at Dauntless. We're going there."

"That's great! Do you have siblings? Will I be teaching any of them this year?"

Caroline shakes her head. "Makayla just turned eleven, and Kerry is seven."

I smile. "Sasha is ten. She'll turn eleven next month. Kendal turns seven on August third."

Caroline smiles warmly at me. "They probably know each other then." I smile, and say, "Probaly. I know if Kerry is in Kendal's class, they know each other. I'm not so sure about Sasha. She's always been more of an introvert."

Caroline smiles, and says, "Makayla probably does know her. She's unusually observant."

Caroline then expalins she came over to ask if I could lend her a cell phone charger—her dad's was broken, and he wasn't feeling well—he has the stomach flu. I give her the charger quickly, of course. As I watch her walk back across the lawn to Four's house, I find myself wondering what the dude is like.
