Kai had never seen anything like it. She had worked in the palace for ten years and had seen many diseases, but none of them looked like what the Fire Lord thought his mother had. He came to her very early in the morning, saying Lady Ursa was sick, but she looked fine to Kai.
When she first saw the woman, it looked like she had been beaten. Purple bruises bloomed on her neck and hips. Red marks, minor burns, and what looked like claw marks dotted what should be flawless skin. The woman looked like she had ran across a night of good rough sex to Kai, but she couldn't say that to the Fire Lord, for this woman was his mother. Kai glanced at the young man that ruled the Fire Nation and wondered if he knew his mother had a lover— someone who was clearly giving the woman a dose of rough sex and had no problems with marking her.
"So what's wrong with her?" The Ford Lord asked, snapping Kai from her thoughts.
Kai smoothed a hand through her hair. This was not going to be easy. With a sigh, Kai replied, "She's fine, but she might have a very bad case of night tremors."
The Fire Lord peered at his mother skeptically. "Those marks on her look like something else."
Kai looked at Lady Ursa, noticing the woman's inattention to the world around her. Her golden eyes were unfocused, after she was daydreaming. Kai sighed. "Well, sometimes the tremors get very violent. I'll keep her here for observation over night and see what happens."
The Fire Lord heaved a weary sigh. "Okay, but I want a full report."
Kai smiled. "Sure."
The healer waited for the man to leave before returning her attention to the woman still sitting in her office. Rumors claimed Princess Azula could be seen roaming the walls late at night, entering her mother's room. It was not unheard of for two royals to sleep together, but a little uncommon for the two to be women. To Kai's quiet appreciation, it kept people out of her infirmary, for Princess Azula was tamer, which meant less people got hurt around the palace. That made Kai's job easier and less stressful.
Although she didn't want to be nosy, part of her longed to know if there was any truth behind the rumors. Lady Ursa only came to her once a year for a check-up. Kai wanted to know what the woman was doing with the princess to end up so battered.
Kai bent to examine a darker bruise below Lady Ursa's jaw. "So, what's really going on?"
The older woman looked at her and smiled back, though it didn't touch her eyes. "Nothing."
Kai felt her eyes narrow in unintentional frustration. "I know where the marks come from."
The healer had never seen Lady Ursa look angry before, but the glare she gave Kai was different, reminding her of the hard stares of Princess Azula. Chills erupted along Kai's body, as if someone had slipped ice down her robes. "What I mean is," she amended quickly. "I know how most people get marks like that. They have four causes: falling, fighting, Agni Kai's, or sex. As far as I know you haven't fallen, fought, or taken part in an Agni Kai."
The older woman's sharp eyes studied Kai. "It's none of your business."
"I know," Kai sighed, "but your son wants answers and some of those wounds need treatment."
"Treat me and tell my son it was the tremors. I'll stay here over night and leave in the morning."
Kai shook her head, realizing there was nothing she could do and not wanting to irritate the woman further. She retrieved a first aid kit and set about the task of treating the Fire Lord's mother. If Lady Ursa refused to tell her what was going on, she wouldn't press her.
