02. Respite
The rice cake falls apart in her hands
and Addison cries as
crumbs land on her favorite pants
head held high even in the dark room.
She hears her ex-husband ex-lover ex-friend's name
clumsily roll out of her mouth sideways,
upside down,
wrong.
He didn't even look at her today,
shredding her ex-life into tiny pieces
with meticulous indifference,
airing his stone-cold pain
with ears plugged.
She sits in the supply closet for an hour,
counting the boxes of surgical gloves.
Her throat is sore from screaming.
