Silent Night
Deanlu
Rizzoli and Isles are the property of TNT and Tess Gerritson. I have only borrowed them for a little bit of fun.
This is a short piece which even I looked at more than once. I hope some of you get it.
Maura leaned her head against the wooden back of the pew in front of her. Her eyes close attempting to blot out what her eyes had seen.
She took a shaky breath in and then slowly let it out attempting to calm herself.
The old church was cold, drafty but seemed like the right place to head when she needed a little peace from the crime scene. There was barely anyone in the church as it was near midnight.
She took another shaky breath in and let it out slowly as she continued to center herself.
The murder on Christmas Eve that had interrupted the Rizzoli family festivities had been an unwelcome gift. The moment Maura and Jane had walked into the home it had become a nightmare.
Once again the ME took a deep breath and then let it slowly out.
Two children and the mother were found dead. The detectives felt it was a robbery gone wrong by the time they had finished processing most of the scene.
Another moment, another breath.
Maura had released the bodies to her crew. But here she sat at the nearby church trying not to believe everything in the world was so evil.
In and out, slowly centering.
The whispered sounds of parishioners praying reached her ears. Their fevered prayers and penance rising.
Breath in, breath out slowly.
She looked up toward the altar as she saw a tall, lithe, Italian woman lit three candles and then kneel before the altar. She rose a few minutes later looking up at the cross that hung above the altar.
Breath in, breath out slowly.
She turned and walked straight to the medical examiner the normal swagger in her step nonexistent tonight. Detective Jane Rizzoli crossed herself sliding into the pew next to Maura.
Breath in, Breath out.
Maura expected Jane to say something, but the detective just grabbed one of Maura's hands and held it close. Jane knelt forward and bowed her head, silent tears falling.
Breath in, Breath out.
Maura joined her, sniffling a little. Jane gathered Maura to her side allowing the warmth of their love to push away the demons in the night.
Maura took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
The couple rose together and left the church. Outside Maura went to say something to Jane, but Jane covered her lips with her fingers.
Breath in, Breath out.
Maura looked questioningly into Jane's eyes and saw deep understanding. Jane guided her love to her car which in short while took them back to the Rizzoli's.
Breath in, Breath out.
At the front door of the Maura's house the ME looked up at the night sky. The stars gleamed down on this silent night watching over the couple.
Breath in, Breath out.
The door opened as Angela Rizzoli gathered them into a home of joy, light, and warmth. Friends arrived shortly after to share their time as Maura looked out the window at the night sky.
Breath in, Breath out.
Silence can be louder than words in a night. I am Maura Isles, I speak for the dead when they are silent.
Breath In, Breath Out.
Maura looked up as she felt warm hands wrap around her waist. She looked into the eyes of her detective finding the healing love even in the silence.
