Today is the day.
Jess knew it. She knew she couldn't deal with her housefolk, pampering and primping her. Yes, today truly was the day she would open herself to a new life, a new beginning, perhaps; she had heard about cats that had lived beyond the mere peaking-holes of her barricaded fence. 'Clan cats', she recalled. She had heard about them from her neighbor friend, Barney. She knew he didn't want to experience the life she wished. He was fearful, he didn't want to take risks, or live life on the edge.
"I just want to know what it's like to be a Clan cat", Jess had complied. This had stunned Barney, more than it did to encourage her.
"Jess, are you sure want to do this?", He tried to pressure her, to make her ponder the executive decision she wanted to make.
"Yes, I'm sure", Jess replied with a sincere grin.
Barney paused. "Well, I suppose I shouldn't object", He mewed hesitantly. He shifted with unease, his aspect perched atop of the wooden fence. "But I do think you're mouse-brained, to be desiring such a life".
Jess stifled a purr of amusement. "I think you're mouse-brained to want to continue living a life inside a cage", Her gaze tore from the black-and-white tom, as she looked onward to the woodland. "-Instead of living past the indoors".
"At least I'm not risking my life", Barney mused with a chuckle. With that, he leaped down from the roughly painted fence, his gaze locked onto Jess, as they glistened with earnestness. "Just be careful", He warned, his whiskers nearly brushing her's.
"I will", She mewed breathlessly. "I will for you, at least".
"Good", Barney acknowledged. As if wanting to conclude the farewell, he leaped onto his side of the fence, and slipped into his housefolks' den.
"Goodbye, Barney", Jess muttered, silently pleading to not shed a tear. Slithering out from a dirt crevice, she set out on her quest. A quest that would certainly change her life, possibly for the better, perhaps.
