Author's note: Hmm…just a very short one-shot about Gai and Kakashi. The idea came to me one night and so I wrote it down. Hope you enjoy it!

not a friend
Kakashi's best friend was Obito Uchiha and Obito Uchiha was dead and Kakashi knew that you had to respect the dead.
So Gai couldn't be his best friend.
Gai wasn't even a friend.
All friends Kakashi ever had were already dead and Gai was still alive.
He couldn't be a friend, because Kakashi knew that all his friends would die before him, but Gai had promised to live longer than Kakashi.
Kakashi knew that Gai always kept his promises. If he said he wouldn't die before Kakashi, then he wouldn't. Gai was an obnoxious rarity that just wouldn't die, he was Kakashi's rival and a man who always kept his promises.
So when Gai came to him short before Lee's operation and told him that he might not be able to keep his promise, Kakashi prayed silently the entire night for their lives.
Because if Gai died then he would have to call him a friend.
Because all his friends died before him.
But Gai wasn't his friend.
So Gai couldn't die.
Because he wasn't Kakashi's friend and because he had promised it long ago that he wouldn't die and because Gai always, always kept his promises.
So no Gai wouldn't die and Lee would get out of this operation perfectly fine.
Because Gai wasn't Kakashi's friend.
Especially not his best friend.
Because Kakashi's best friend was Obito Uchiha and Obito Uchiha was dead and you had to respect the dead.
