Sauter wine
As he later learnt, it was what his mother had longed for since she was a child. His father looked happy too, and it seemed to help improve his humor – in the following six months, he didn't hit his wife.
One way or another, a baby girl was born.
He now had a sister. A beautiful little thing with fair skin, brown eyes and, after some initial weeks of baldness, what he had not expected – brown hair.
Because his two brothers and he had inherited their mother's ash blonde hair, he had taken for granted that so would the new baby. The boy felt disappointed and even annoyed at first (the baby looked way too much like their father), but whenever he gazed into the cradle and saw her rosy cheeks and clumsy smile, he felt somehow better.
Years passed. And, in spite of all the comments from well-meaning acquaintances and strangers on how new children solved every single problem a couple could have, what they all feared eventually happened.
Saki sobbed quietly as the police officers confirmed it to them – their mother had been killed by their own father.
In the orphanage, the four sealed an unspoken pact: when they take you away, scream and kick and be the worst child ever so they'll bring you back to us. Of course they had aunts and uncles (and even their grandmother, who still lived) in the far away Netherlands, but those relatives couldn't take care of them. They only had each other now – the four of them were the only family they still could rely on.
When their father died, only a few months after their mother, they did not really care. But then came into their lives something they had seemed to forget about.
Even Saki, only five years old by the death of their mother, knew who her parents worked for. They all knew who had had their father stabbed so that he could not let any secrets out during the trial for his wife's murder. And they also had for sure, ever since their mother died, that the Organization would come for them sooner or later. Thus, when the two men dressed entirely in black appeared at the door of the orphanage, it wasn't exactly a surprise. The four siblings remained silent as the black car drove them away from the orphanage – it was safer that way. Moreover, they were still together.
The following months were not as bad as they could have. The siblings lived in an apartment belonging to the Organization. The twins turned sixteen. Their younger brother started to be trained as an assassin. Saki's Dutch improved, as it was the language the four spoke when they wanted no one to understand them.
Life went on.
'How was your day?'
Gin's hair was still wet from the shower when he walked into the dining room. At least, now it smelled like shampoo and not gunpowder.
'Fine,' he answered. 'And yours?'
'Fine, too,' Saki responded. She shrugged her shoulders and placed the two plates she was holding on the table. Although only thirteen, she could proudly say she was a good enough cook to make dinner when her brother came home late. Now that the twins lived on their own, she had had to learn some basic household skills.
'Do you know the mark of your last Maths exam yet?' asked Gin while helping her set the table. 'It's been a week…'
'The teacher said she'll have them by Friday. In the meantime, we can only wait.'
'I'm sure you'll pass.'
Smiling at her brother, Saki finally sat down and then started to eat.
'And did you manage to finally get the APTX?' she asked after a while.
'Not yet,' he answered with a grunt. Saki looked up from her plate – her brother seemed quite disappointed. 'No matter how hard I try, that damned scientist won't give in…'
'That… Sherry, wasn't it?'
He nodded his head.
'One tough nut to crack she is. A big-headed scientist that bites the very hand that feeds her. I can't stand her.'
'But I thought you said she was attractive?'
'She has a nice body, that's true,' Gin admitted, still impassible. 'But not good enough to make up for her inflated ego and antisocial ways. No wonder nobody likes her!'
'Don't you even think about her,' Saki advised him. 'She does not deserve your attention.'
'By the way,' he started, suddenly remembering, 'I'll come home very late tomorrow. Do not wait for me – have dinner on your own and then go to bed.'
'Where are you going?'
'To a theme park. "Tropical Land" it's called. If it looks good, we can go for your birthday,' he added with a wink.
Saki smiled at him.
'That sounds great!'
Gin smiled too.
Two days later, Saki sat at that very table and had dinner with his brother once more. She listened as he told her about the theme park, about the blackmailing that had been the core of their mission and about the young detective he had mercilessly shot dead. She mentioned she had heard about it on TV, although the police had no idea who the boy's murderer could be. Then they talked about her upcoming birthday and planned going to the beach with the twins in summer.
And she cherished having her brothers' love, as they were all that mattered to her in the whole world.
Author's notes:
¡Hola! Hello! Hallo! こんにちは! Salut! Here comes Sherry Furude once more, ready for attack!
It's been so long! I have been very busy lately, and I was dying to have some free time to write and publish. And here I am, at last! Thanks to you all for your patience, especially to the anon that requested this fic on Tumblr. The request was quite simple: a 'story of Gin with his cute little sister.' It gave me both an interesting starting point (which I don't think I would have been likely to consider myself) and freedom enough to shape the plot just as I wanted.
As you may have read in the summary, this is an AU from my usual timeline. You will have probably noticed the greatest differences: Gin has a younger sister, doesn't love (or even have a friendly relationship with) Sherry and shoots Shinichi dead at Tropical Land. The Detective Conan series as we know them, thus, would never happen in this AU. And why is it that Gin decides to shoot Shinichi, you ask? It is because, as it is mentioned and discussed in the fic, he has had no access to the APTX because Sherry refuses to give it to him. I have the headcanon (on which I've been wanting to write for a long time) that Sherry only gave him the APTX because she trusted him. So in this AU, in which they aren't even on friendly terms, Gin did not have the APTX pills when he encountered Shinichi at Tropical Land, meaning that he had only one option to effectively kill him: by shooting him dead. Thus, Shinichi never shrinks - instead, he dies.
And there's a further difference, which you may not have noticed: Gin's brothers don't die. The timeline from which this fic differs comes not exactly from my Spanish-written fic Recuerdos de Infancia, but from a sort of rewriting (of said fic) I'm currently working on. I am not exactly sure of when I'll be able to publish it (and I warn you that it may take long), but I will work very hard on the fic so it is as good as I'm capable of. I can't say much about the plot because it would be a spoiler, but I can tell you its current title (which may or may not be the final one): Rewriting.
And what's up with the title of this fic you have just read, you ask? 'Sauter' is actually a Dutch wine - and I originally intended it to be Saki's codename in the Organization. I eventually discarded the idea of showing her as an official, active member because she is too young, even by the end of this fic. Nevertheless, I chose this title in order to emphasize the great influence and impact of the Black Organization on Saki's life.
And this is it, I guess. Thank you very much for reading! Please tell me if you find any kind of mistake. And I would be very glad to read your thoughts on the fic, too!
Thanks again to all of you for your time and attention. Lots of love and see you next time!
Sherry F.
