A twelve year-old Lily Evans sat on the edge of the wide riverbank near her home. In her lap sat a ragged sketch pad with several loose papers sticking out the sides. One of Lily's favourite pastimes was sketching. Her drawings usually included that of nature or family. A slight breeze moved through the almost meadow-like area in which she sat. Red hair fluttered behind her, blowing it gently into her pale face. Along with the wind came the soft whispering of the blowing grass. Closing her eyes lightly, Lily let herself be lost within her surroundings. The young girl lay back upon the soft green blanket, still clutching her notebook. Her white sundress blew and whipped with the breeze, shoes lost in the grass.

Outstretching her arms into the pasture, and letting her book fall from beneath her fingers; Lily listened to the peaceful sounds of nature. From behind her, she heard heavy footfalls and jerked into a sitting position, twisting her shoulders to see who was approaching her. Upon seeing the shaggy black hair and pale face of her best friend, Severus Snape, Lily sprang to her feet. Rushing towards her well cherished companion she threw her arms around him in a full embrace. It was the first time she had seen Severus since summer started, since school. He also looked delighted to see her, and returned her hug blissfully. It took no effort to be happy when he was with Lily, the only person in the world that seemed to understand him. The only one who he could truly be himself with.

Smiling, Lily took the hand of her friend and led him to the spot in which she had earlier been reclining. Sitting back on the windswept grass, they began talking; telling each other stories. Lily picked up her sketch book and began to show Severus when he asked shyly if he could see her drawings. The sun was starting to fall behind the clouds and the temperature beginning to fall. Noticing this, and glumly telling the other they had to get home, they stood. Slowly; sadly the friends said their goodbyes, letting their hands linger for a moment longer before parting, and began to walk towards their respective homes in the fading light.
