He Loved Her

He loved her. Watching her leave had been the hardest part of his life, even outweighing the scenes of carnage that he had painfully witnessed all those years ago. He had been mad... mad and lonely, with only a drunken rabbit and a rather demented smiling cat, for a long time, and she had made him much less lonely, and maybe even a bit sane.

He loved her. He had asked her to stay, and when she refused, when those words left her beautiful lips, he had broken inside. It had been a year since the White Queen had reclaimed her throne, since the Jabberwocky was defeated, since she had left, and he was still broken.

He loved her. He was now less cheerful at tea, he scarcely ever made hats, and no matter how much the Cheshire Cat pleaded, he hadn't done any futterwacking since she left. The White Queen begged him to be his old, mad, cheerful self again, and though he tried, he couldn't. She had ripped out his insane heart and left something else in its place. Something... colder.

He loved her. And he missed her. So he waited. He waited for the day that she would return, like she had before, and bring the light of day and the essence of hope along with her. He wished now that he would have told her that he loved her; instead of letting her leave with only a plead to stay. Maybe if he had told her, she would have stayed, and they would be having tea and exploring the castle and just being together because that was all he wanted.

Because he loved her.
