Story Time
"Are you guys excited, we get to go listen to a story, it's going to be so much fun." Jackie told her kids as they were driving to the library.
Once a month the local library have what they call story time, that simply means that a library volunteer reads the kids a couple stories.
Jackie had never taken her kids before and she thought it would be fun for them to get out of the house, and they loved being read to so this promised to be fun. Since Nick was home from work already for the day he went with them.
"Yeah." Jasmine said happily from the backseat.
Jackie pulled into the library parking lot and was surprised at how full it was.
Nick and Jackie led the kids to the back area of the library where story time would be held, there were several kids already sitting on the carpet, eagerly awaiting the stories.
Soon the librarian walked over.
"I'm sorry everyone but our volunteer is sick today, story time has been canceled." She said.
"Oooooh." All the little kids said, disappointment obvious in all their little voices.
"How about if I read the stories instead? I'm a first grade teacher, I'd be happy to be the substitute volunteer for the day." Jackie said immediately.
"Yeah mama do." Johnna said, clearly loving the idea.
"Alright, that's a great idea, if you don't mind? I'd offer to do it myself but I can't leave the checkout counter unattended for that long." The librarian told Jackie.
"Sure, I'd love too." Jackie told her.
"Great, here are the books that our volunteer was going to read today." The librarian told Jackie as she handed her three books.
All of the excited little kids gathered around closer to Jackie so they could see the pictures better.
Nick stood in the back gently rocking Sloan, who was wide awake and appearing to be awaiting the story like all the other kids. Jackie was a just a couple of pages into the story when she heard a loud squeal, she and all the kids looked back at Sloan, he apparently was loving the story and let his mother and everyone else know it by letting out a loud, happy squeal of approval.
"Shhh buddy." Nick said with a chuckle as he gently covered the baby's mouth.
All the kids giggled at the baby's antics.
Then Jackie got back to the story.
She finished the first story and was just about to start the second one when she looked up and noticed Karlie was crawling away, she had had enough of story time apparently.
"Nicky." Jackie told him as she pointed at the toddler.
"Karlie, where are ya' going?" Nick called after the little girl before taking off at a full sprint to catch her.
He finally caught her and took her back to the carpet area.
"Mommy's reading a story, listen." He whispered in her ear.
Karlie gave him a devilish grin.
"Listen to mommy." He said as he pointed at Jackie.
He was trying not to laugh.
Jackie then started the second story, she finished that one and the third one without anymore interruptions.
After the third and final story was finished the librarian came over and said "Boys and girls lets give our volunteer a big round of applause." She told all the children.
All the kids clapped and cheered.
"Thank you, and thank you for being such good listeners." Jackie said, switching from volunteer mode to teacher mode.
After that Nick, Jackie, and their kids left the library and went out for ice cream. The kids had a lot of fun both at story time and at the ice cream parlor so even though she had not been expecting to be the reader volunteer Jackie considered the day a huge success.
