A/N: Slightly inspired by the fact I became a cashier and what almost happened to me and by the episode "Alive" which I just love. Otonashi's perspective. Oneshot.

""S-sorry" I apologize to my manager as I pick up a mess of oranges that has just fallen before me. It was my fault, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and before I knew it the weight of the box shifted and caught me off guard. "Pay attention next time please" the manager sighed helping me pick up the fallen oranges.
She tells me to move from stocking to scanning because she doesn't want me damaging anymore merchandise. I nod my head and move toward the cash registers.
"I can help you over here in this lane" I call out to a customer.

I feel like if I can keep this up I can help my little sister go out on Christmas and have enough money so I can eat. It makes it easier when you have a goal to work towards. I don't like people too much so customer service is not my favourite.
"I zone them out and focus on the speed of my scanning so I can spend as little time with them as possible. I don't like it very much but hey, a job's a job and I'm grateful I can work.
Somebody had given me their change because I tried to give them their receipt and suddenly they were gone. I slipped the bill in the pocket of my vest before anyone saw.
"It was 200 yen! That was enough to buy one meal.

I scanned out items for the next customer as I showed them their total, my eyes were being covered by little black dots gradually until I could see less and less. The customer must have said something but I didn't hear her because my ears were starting to ring and be blocked off. I didn't know what was happening! I felt very hot and weightless for a moment as the world went completely black.

"Otonashi, are you alright?" I heard a voice and realized I was on the ground. My back hurt which meant I must have fallen backwards. I wondered what had happened, everything was normal for a second but then I just came to be on the ground. A person came to help me up and it was my manager from my work. I became to clue in to had what happened.
"I think so" I respond. I felt a bit sick to my stomach but I didn't want to mention it.
"Please take the rest of the day off Otonashi, you don't seem well" she muttered.
"I can't leave now! How was I going to get any extra money for my sister or for food? I had 4 hours left of work and it was an 8 hour shift.

I began to protest but she just walked with me towards the back lounge and handed me water from the cooler. I felt better, as the drink quenched my thirst. I grabbed my backpack put my navy vest inside. "Arigatou gozaimasu".
As I left the building my stomach rumbled.

Maybe I fainted because I didn't have lunch yet. Could have been the lack of sleep I had yesterday or maybe for even standing for too long quite possibly I could have locked my knees.

Instead of going straight home I walked towards the connivence store and picked up a tamago sandwich that was exactly 200 yen. I ate it eagerly as I went out the door. Since I span style felt ok now I changed my mind and headed towards the hospital to visit my sister Hatsune. I couldn't wait to see her.
