Author's Note: This is a one-shot that I got from re-reading Order of the Phoenix just before I went to see Prizoner of Azkaban for the second time. What would Remus Lupin have wanted to say to Snape after the conversation with Harry? Especially after Sirius never got the chance...

Severus Snape knocked on the door, distatefully. A rather mournful voice beckoned him in.

"I have your potion, Remus," he said, "There's enough here for the entire term." He sneered, "Don't spill it, for I will not be able to get any more to you before Christmas."

"Thank you, Severus," the werewolf replied, lounging despondantly on the bed.

"Good day, Mr. Lupin." Snape replied, turning to leave.

"Professor Snape! Wait!" Remus cried. "There's something I need to tell you."

"What is it?" he replied, warily. He didn't trust werewolves; he didn't trust Gryffindors; and he especially didn't trust the best friend of James Potter and Sirius Black. Nevertheless, he sat down on the end of the bed.

"Last term, a few weeks before Sirius... before he died, Harry managed to contact us, rather illegally, I do admit. He had, I believe, just seen something rather disturbing in your pensieve."

"I have no wish to reminisce about that particular memory, Lupin. I dislike listening to Gryffindors gloat," Snape interrupted coldly. The only remaning Marauder grabbed his arm.

"No, Severus, I don't want to gloat. Please, let me finish," he begged. "Harry was quite disturbed. He couldn't believe his father had done something so horrible. I believe he wanted us to prove your memory wrong."

Snape snorted.

"We couldn't, and he was sorely disappointed. He is much more like Lily was at that age than James, Severus. It made Sirius and me think. We had a long conversation about it afterwards. He... He was genuinely sorry for what he had done, and that he had taken the rivalry too far." Remus sighed, choking back his grief. "I'd just like to say that I am truly sorry that I never bothered to stop them, and that it is one of the things I will regret for the rest of my life."

For the first time in years, Snape didn't have a piece of sarcastic wit to launch at his former school enemy. He was shocked. "Thank you, Remus," he said quietly, standing to leave.

"Severus," Lupin said, "Sirius would have told you the same thing, had he lived, and James as well, I'm sure of it."

"I will see you at Christmas, Remus," came the reply, as the door closed behind the potions master.
