I am frozen; staring at what I assume is going to be the cause of my death. Sergeant Jackson, who is an esteemed part of the Central military unit, is pointing a gun at me. A million thoughts zoom through my brain- Why is he going to kill me? Where are Alphonse and Edward? I desperately want to call out to them, but my voice won't work. I struggle against the bindings that hold my arms up, attached to the ceiling by a rope. There is a loud click as he cocks his gun.

"It seems that the Elric brothers don't care for you as much as I thought they did." His voice is deep and menacing. "I guess I can't end up sparing you… what a shame." I close my eyes and flinch as I hear a gunshot, followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground. I don't feel any pain, but I don't dare open my eyes yet.

"Fullmetal, you did show." Jackson cackles.

I open my eyes when I hear Edward's voice, weak and pain-filled- "Don't you… hurt anyone else…" He is on the ground with both hands pressed to a wound on his side, blood pumping out between his fingers.

"Ed… no…" My voice cracks and tears fill my eyes. He weakly raises his arms and claps, then touches the ground. A blue light travels from his hands up to the wall behind me, causing a sharp rock to jut out and cut me loose.

"Run, Kay."

No, I can't just leave you here! I want to vocalize my thoughts, but another gunshot rings out and I feel a heavy pain in my upper arm, causing me to shout out.

"I wouldn't advise trying to escape; it brings false hope. There's no way Edward will survive this time." He runs out, leaving my head spinning. This time? There were more times?I snap out of my thoughts as I hear Edward groan loudly. I rip a strip of cloth from my sleeve and wrap it around my arm to at least slow the bleeding, though there is too much. Before I'm sure of what I'm doing, I am at Edward's side.

The blood is coming from a spot on the left side of his torso. I pull off my shirt, revealing a black tank top underneath, and press the cloth to his wound. His hands move out from underneath it. "Why, Ed? Why did you have to jump in the way?"

"I couldn't… let him hurt you." Edward manages to choke out. I take in a breath as if to reply, but then I hear the heavy metal footsteps behind me that can only belong to Alphonse.

"Brother? Kayla, what happened?" His voice is heartbroken.

"A man shot Ed." I keep it short, not trusting myself with many more words. "You need to carry him; we need to get back quickly." Al scoops Ed up, and I notice that he is now completely limp. There is still a shallow rise and fall of his chest, but he doesn't look good. "C'mon." I take of down the hall, ignoring the lightheaded feeling I get.

We run for a while, surprised at how lucky we are when we find no opposition. We reach the exit, and the door opens. The last thing I see before everything fades to black is Roy Mustang's face as I fall.
