Anything You Ask: SaraxGaito

"Hello? Is there anyone here?" Sara glided into another stone room, the hem of her white dress brushing the floor. "Hello?"

This room, like the ones before it, was empty. "Hmph." Why would there be a castle on the sea floor, with no one living in it? She'd finished her tour of the rooms, and liked what she saw. Hot tubs, a garden of black roses… this place was luxurious beyond belief. Almost as pretty as where she used to-

No. Don't think about that. I can't even think of thinking about that, or I'll think about him, and then I'll-

A tear rolled down Sara's face, but she made no move to wipe it away.

Think of happy things, Sara. Blood, death, destruction. Songs that hurt people's ears.

He whirled around, his eyes wide, and gaped at her.

Sara stared back at him, narrowing her orange eyes.

Finally the boy spoke. "What kind of fish are you?"

"Fish? I'm not a fish. I'm a mermaid princess. My name is Sara."

"Oh, sorry." He looked down. "I've never met anyone who's not a fish before. My name is Gaito, by the way." Gaito smiled at her. It was a sweet, shy smile, just like-

Sara buried her face in her hands, unable to stop the flow of tears.

"Hey, are you okay?"

She nodded unconvincingly, her shoulders shaking.

"Please, don't cry," Gaito begged, but that only made her cry harder. "Please- beautiful mermaid- isn't there anything that will cheer you up?"

Sara lifted her tearstained face. "Huh?"

"I'll do anything you ask, my princess."

"Anything?"

"Anything."

"Well, now that you mention it…" A plan was beginning to form inside the mermaid's head. "There's this one little thing…" And, for the first time in years, Sara smiled.
