Chapter 1
Hermione
screamed into a pillow in frustration. Ron was so maddening! He would
never understand her! And Harry wasn't much better! Why did they
have to gang up on her? It was all that stupid Firebolt's fault! It
wasn't like she was trying to make her two best friends miserable;
she just didn't think that it would be safe for Harry to ride it.
She supposed that it didn't help that Professor McGonagall
had agreed with her. Ron and Harry had always thought that the
transfiguration teacher was much too uptight. But Hermione was only
doing it for Harry's safety... Really. It is for his own good,
Hermione thought.
But as much as she tried to tell them that,
they wouldn't listen. They had both stopped speaking to her, and
Ron had even started to talk about her behind her back. And they
definitely weren't the sort of things that she'd brag about.
Hermione sighed and decided to head down to the common room.
Maybe they would be in a better mood by then.
Little did she
know was that the first person she'd meet would have a sympathetic
ear. To her further amazement, she discovered that person to be Fred
Weasley.
"Hermione! I've only just found out about that
brother of mine! I'd disown him if Mum would let me!" Fred said
with one of his freckled grins, the only sign of Fred's normally
flippant attitude. "Seriously though, you deserve better," Fred
said, with sudden concern on his face, and Hermione was surprised to
see that he was serious.
"Since when have you been so
concerned for my welfare?" Hermione asked, a bit confused, which
happened so rarely that she almost didn't recognize the feeling.
"Hermie... Do you mind if I call you that?" Not waiting
for an answer, he continued, "Hermie, I haven't realized until
now what a jerk I've been. I shouldn't make so much trouble.
You've always been right. Your saving Harry from a possible death
from that Firebolt has helped me to realize something I should have
realized a long time ago."
Hermione raised her eyebrows.
She seriously began to regret going to the Common Room as she backed
away slowly from the red-headed boy in front of her. Something was
definitely wrong here.
"Who are
you, and what have you done with Fred?"

Ron
was sitting comfortably in his chair, trying to do his astronomy
homework when he heard something that made him straighten up.
"Hermione, I am serious. The way you've acted in this
situation has just confirmed what I have been feeling for so long.
There is a fire burning inside of me, and you are the firecracker
that started it!" Fred said, with all seriousness in his
voice.
How poetic, Ron thought. His next reflections were less
sarcastic, as he found that the shock abruptly cleared his mind of
all other thought for some moments.
Hermione was saved from having to reply, as a loud thump distracted both Hermione and Fred, which was followed by a distinctive moan that only Ron could make after falling out of his chair.
