"So how about it then, Evans?" The infuriatingly obnoxious voice rings through my head and I am forced to turn around and look into Potter's smirking face. I don't bother to smile. I sigh loudly to convey how irritated I am and then turn around, about to walk away like I do every time he asks me out, which is a lot. "Oh come on, don't be like that," he calls out, and I can hear the grin in his voice, "You know you love me really." I continue to walk, my pace getting faster and faster until I am almost running. "Evans, wait! I'll make a deal with you!" At this, I stop and turn around. These are new words. "If you go out with me, I won't jinx Sniv-, sorry, Severus, for a whole week" he smiles, thinking he's got me there, that I'll finally say yes to going out on a date with him. The finality of my next words shock even me a little bit, "Look, I don't care what you do with Severus, that's none of my business." At least, I try my best not to care any more. "Hey you may say and act like you don't care, but deep down, you do. I know you do" he says after a moment's silence. He's obviously worried he's losing this game. Even though he's an annoying toerag and I would never admit he was right, I have to agree with what he's said. "Okay", I say, but it seems as if someone else is controlling the words that tumble out of my mouth, "I'll go out with you, just this once." For a second, his mouth drops open, but then he composes himself and puts on his usual smirk, rumples up his hair further, and says, almost in a taunting voice as if he has known all along that one day I would not be able to resist going out with him, "Great. We'll meet outside Honeydukes tomorrow at two." At that, he turns around and begins to walk away, but then turns his head and looks at me, "Oh, and Evans? You'll be with me, so... I know it's difficult to look as good as me because I've set the bar pretty high, but try to look presentable for tomorrow." And then he winks and finally walks away. I groan. What have I done? Potter's hardly my type of person. I wonder how this will turn out. It should be interesting.
