"Star-light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight."
It had been ages since the last time she'd whispered those words. Then she had been curled on her bed with the window thrown open to let the night breeze blow in off the fields; now she stood on a skyscraper rooftop in New York City with the dank city air a bit more bearable in the cool dark. Then she had been wishing for the football captain to notice her; now she was wishing for the handsome playboy of the NYPD crime lab. Then the night was silent, her wishes gone ungranted, but tonight some far-off magic had driven her, mid-shift, out onto the roof where the breezes whispered promises.
"Lindsay?"
Turning, she saw him silhouetted at the rooftop door, craning his head to the right. Rolling her eyes, she called from the left, "Right here, Danny."
He whipped around, and on seeing her pushed past the doorframe and ambled over to her, hands in his pockets. "Been lookin' for ya for the last 20 minutes, ya just disappeared. What happened?"
Lindsay covered her face with her hands and groaned, "Sorry, Danny. I…I just needed out for a little while." She honestly hadn't intended to leave him with the case, and could quite easily see him returning, confused, to their empty office before setting off in search of her. Still talking into her hands, she kept going. "I know you must be just as tired as me, I'm sorry…"
Gentle hands pulled her fingers down and held onto them. Looking up, she found Danny standing rather closer then he had been a few moments before. He was watching her carefully, and Lindsay let her eyes flit closed instead of holding his gaze. A moment later she felt soft lips against hers; a questioning kiss that she answered with a tug on his hands, pulling him closer. His taste filled her mouth, and too soon they were both low on oxygen. Danny released her hands to wrap his arms around her waist, and Lindsay willingly settled her head against his chest. They stood for long moments, his heartbeat drowning the city from her ears, before he spoke.
"So, what were ya doin' up here, anyway, Montana?" he whispered into her hair.
"Wishing on a star," she mumbled back, voice muffled by his shirt. A chuckle rumbled through his body, sending shivers down her spine.
"For…"
"You."
