Happy birthday, Sarah3Noelle!
"She doesn't love you, George. I'm sorry."
He couldn't understand it. How could she not love him? Everyone else loved him. He was perfect. He had the looks, the popularity, the wit... alright, maybe he didn't have the money, but weren't girls meant to be able to look passed that? Maybe Angelina had the wrong idea. Katie had to love him. He loved her, so she had to love him back.
Fred didn't help at all. Angelina was practically an angel in his eyes, so whatever she said just had to be true. George couldn't believe his ears when Fred, his darling twin that he'd stuck by since (and before) birth, had told him to back off. If anyone was to understand, George was sure it would be Fred. But no, Fred had told him that she "wasn't worth it" and it was a "waste of time" trying.
"You're an idiot. She didn't like you then, and she sure as hell doesn't now."
George wasn't sure what had possessed him to kiss her that day. She'd looked so pretty standing there. (Yeah, alright, he was weak, okay?) It wasn't a big kiss - he didn't make a show of it. It was merely a peck. Either way, Katie blew her top. She'd even managed a well aimed kick that had him in the fetal position within seconds.
Angelina had been furious. She didn't even give him a sympathetic look as she passed him, still curled up on the floor. Shaking her head, Angelina announced to the whole common room that he was an idiot. Even stick-up-the-arse Granger had laughed.
What hurt the most was Fred's reaction. He'd turned his head, biting his lip, as if deciding what to do. And after offering George a hand up and a weak smile, he'd scurried after Angie. Merlin, that boy was whipped.
"Well, you did bring it on yourself."
Katie stopped talking to him. Even during Quidditch practice she didn't say a word. He'd apologized - numerous times, actually. Bunches of roses and boxes of chocolates later, George had found himself in a corner with his twin's girlfriend's wand at his throat. But he didn't want to leave Katie alone. He loved her, and was intent on proving it to her. Was that so wrong with that?
"Merlin... I'm sorry, George. I really am."
He'd given up eventually. He wouldn't have, because he did like her - he liked her a lot. And when he saw her with Oliver... doing that he was fairly certain that he'd lost. There was nothing more to it. For the first time in his life, George hadn't got the girl.
And it hurt. It hurt a lot.
