He held her carefully.
Princess Tomoyo was aware, and suddenly aware, she was in the arms of the country's strongest Ninja, their illicit shadows illuminated by the soft glow of moonshine. She sighed.
If only he knew.
She knew.
"I want to hold you like this forever," Kurogane said softly. She smiled to herself because he could not see her face. "I want to hold you everyday, knowing it will not be the last time-"
"But what if it is the last time?" Tomoyo whispered gently. Her eyes clouded with tears like the way storm clouds arranged themselves meticulously around the bright moon.
"Then at least I have shared this precious moment with you."
His voice, usually rash and impatient, was filled with sincerity and a deep soothing drawl. Noticing that Tomoyo made no reply, he asked, "Is anything wrong?"
She shook her head, the bells on her headdress tinkling slightly, like the silvery peals of her joyous giggles. He noticed she was not smiling any more as he turned her towards him.
"Tomoyo-hime. Tomoyo?" Kurogane asked, gently shaking her and brushing away those stray tears dancing down her beautiful face. She forced a half-smile and shook her head.
"I don't know if this will be the last time... I miss you."
"What are you talking about? I'm here," Kurogane asked, his eyebrows raised high.
Nothing. She shook her head, muffling her cries with a slight hiccup. "Gomen."
"Then let us enjoy this precious moment." He drew her into a tighter embrace than before.
She peered at their silhouttes from the side of his arm, a dark form in the middle of a moonlit path, two bodies, but only one heart.
Maybe she would have to wait forever for him to be back at her side again, like this.
But she would wait anyway.
