Another drabble for Princess Mononoke, this time in third person, but following San.

If you read Restored, this could be taken as a sequel or companion to that piece.

Disclaimer: All characters and places are owed to the genius Hayao Miyazaki. I just write the words.

San crept quietly back to the cave where she slept with her wolf brothers, taking care to keep her footsteps light.

She had just come from speaking to Ashitaka. He had had news of some trade business Iron Town was endeavoring in. He had also informed her that there would be more travelers on the road than usual as winter broke for spring.

San was still wary of the town and the multitude of people that lived there, but she was slowly getting over her guardedness.

Ashitaka had taken over his position as one of the town officials with ease. San knew it was in his blood, since he was a former prince.

San suppressed a smile as she reached the cave mouth. Seeing and speaking with Ashitaka always made her insides swell with happiness.

San? called one of her brothers.

"It's me," she answered softly.

Her brother rolled over to look at her, his eyes full of guarded curiosity.

Did you go see that human again?

San frowned.

"His name is Ashitaka," she answered stiffly.

Her brother was quiet for a moment before he said, What draws you to him?

San got comfortable, settling herself under her pelt.

She closed her eyes, feeling fatigue wash over her.

"It's his spirit. It's so . . . peaceful."

The wolf watched as his sister drifted off into sleep, and nestled closer to her, choosing to trust her judgment.
