AN: In response to a request from mikathekitsune, who wanted Hayner/Roxas - not a pairing I've written before. Hope this satisfies. Not my characters, as ever.

We've been friends for years, along with Pence and Olette. Every day we hang out at the Usual Spot, or climb Sunset Hill and watch the trains go by, or… you get the idea. During the summer, we practically live on the sea salt ice cream for which Traverse Town is famous. I remember the first time I bought him an ice cream simply because I wanted to see him smile. That's when I realised I wanted to be something more than friends.

It was the end of the summer, nearly, and the four of us were in a bit of a panic about the homework we hadn't done. Olette and Pence decided they'd do one part of it if we did the other, so that's what happened. We were sitting together on Sunset Hill, doing whatever piece of work we'd been given (I don't remember, that's how important it was to me). He looked up, about to say something, and I saw him smile. It was something he did so rarely that it was quite an event. That was when I offered to buy him an ice cream. Or, rather, I suggested we get ice cream, and said I'd pay. Roxas is addicted to that stuff, so he wasn't going to say no.

It was after we'd finished eating that it happened. I couldn't help it – I just leaned forward and kissed him. I don't know what made me do it – I'd never been interested in guys before, so I didn't understand this sudden attraction to Roxas. Before I could analyse my thought, though, he was kissing me back. I could taste the ice cream, salty and sweet, and something that was uniquely Roxas, that I can't describe.

That piece of work never did get finished. Olette found us some time later. She'd expected us to go back to the Usual Spot, and when we didn't, she went looking. She probably thought we'd run into Seifer and his gang, who are always trying to cause trouble for us. She definitely didn't expect to find us kissing like there was no tomorrow, in full view of anyone who climbed Sunset Hill. To her credit, she wasn't horrified or disgusted or anything like that, just curious.

We've put up with just about every insult there is, since we got together. And we don't care. We're still together, despite everyone saying it was just a teenage phase we were going through, that it would never last, and all that. And to think, it all started over a simple ice cream and a smile.
